Change Your Gamertag or the Name of Your Gamer Profile

You can change the name of your gamer profile for any reason you'd like. Gamers whose profiles are gamertags (that is, enabled for Xbox Live) face two considerations:

  • Your new gamertag must not be in use by another gamer (if it is, you'll be notified when you attempt to make the change).
  • Gamertag changes cost 800 Microsoft Points.

If you have an offline-only profile, there are no restrictions—you can change it as often as you'd like and to whatever name you wish.

Note

Your profile name or gamertag can be from 1–15 characters (a–z, A–Z, 0–9, and space), it must begin alphabetically, it cannot end in a space, and it cannot contain two spaces in a row.

To change the name of your offline gamer profile:

  1. Turn on your Xbox 360 console with no disc in the tray and select your gamer profile in the Xbox Dashboard.

    Gamer Profile
  2. Select Edit Gamer Profile.
  3. Select Profile Name. At the Edit Profile Name screen, enter a new name and select Done. The change will be reflected on the Edit Gamer Profile screen.

    Tip

You can enter information using either a USB PC keyboard plugged into a controller port or your Xbox 360 controller and the on-screen virtual keyboard.

To change the name of your Xbox Live gamertag:

  1. Turn on your Xbox 360 console with no disc in the tray and sign in to Xbox Live with the profile whose gamertag you want to change.
  2. Select your gamer profile in the Xbox Dashboard.
  3. Select Edit Gamer Profile, Gamertag.
  4. From the Edit Gamertag screen, read the scrolling information under the heading "Change and personalize your gamertag on Xbox Live."

  5. Select Continue to proceed to the Enter Gamertag screen.
  6. Enter an alternate gamertag and select Done.

If your desired gamertag is already in use, you'll be offered several others to choose from. Press Back (B) to try another gamertag; repeat as needed until your chosen gamertag clears the availability check.

    Tip

You can enter information using either a USB PC keyboard plugged into a controller port or your Xbox 360 controller and the on-screen virtual keyboard.

  7. From the Edit Gamertag screen, review your Microsoft Points balance and choose from these options:
    • Select Confirm to complete your gamertag change and start gaming. Xbox Live will automatically deduct 800 Microsoft Points from your balance.
    • Select Redeem Prepaid Card to add points to your membership using a prepaid card. This option automatically translates the length of time of the prepaid code to your points total and configures the conversion status of your account.
    • Select Cancel to return to the Enter Gamertag screen. From here you can modify the new gamertag you're requesting (see Step 6) or press Back (B) to return to the Xbox Dashboard.

To review prices for blocks of Microsoft Points and add Points to your membership, press X (Add Microsoft Points).
