Introduction to Xbox LIVE Connection Methods

In summary, there are five common ways to connect your Xbox360 console to Xbox LIVE.

1. Direct Modem Connection

This is the most direct and simple enough to set up. Some people employ this method for outdoor setups or during a chalet getaway. To read more about this connection, click here.

2. Gateway Connection

If you already have separate modem and router connected to your PC, extending an Ethernet cable to the Xbox360 is all you need to do. To read more about this connection, click here.

3. Router Connection

Most users employ this setup because most broadband ISP gives out free integrated modem/router when a user signs up or re-contracts his broadband plan. Broadband allows you to connect your home phone as well, as shown in the above illustration. To read more about this connection, click here.

4. Windows ICS Connection

If you only have a modem, you can make use of your PC’s Ethernet capability until you decide you invest on a new router. The one downside of this setup is you have to switch on the PC every time you want to connect to Xbox LIVE. To read more about this connection, click here.

5. Wireless Connection

This setup is becoming increasingly popular because it’s so easy to setup. Commonly used in offices and in large homes, where the modem/router is situated on another floor or in another room. No need to move your router or connect a long Ethernet cable to the Xbox360. Just plug it in and you’re done. To read more about this connection, click here.
