Xbox 360 S-Video AV Cable

The Xbox 360™ S-Video AV Cable (sold separately) lets you connect your Xbox 360 console to an S-video–equipped television or audio/video surround receiver.

Video Capabilities

The cable includes video jacks for both S-video (a round, 4-pin connector) and composite video (yellow RCA connector). Both connections support standard interlaced (480i) video signals, but S-video delivers a slightly better image by keeping the video signal's chrominance and luminance—its color and brightness—separate as they travel from source to screen.

Note

Stationary images in video games can "burn" into some TV screens, creating a permanent shadow. To determine if your TV is at risk, consult your TV owner's manual or manufacturer before playing games.

Two additional optional cables facilitate alternate setups for high-definition TV (HDTV) and computer monitors:

Audio Capabilities

The S-video AV cable's high-quality analog audio cables are standard red/white RCA connectors that plug into most televisions and all audio components. This makes it easy to route the sound from the Xbox 360 console into an AV surround receiver or integrated amplifier so that you can listen to your games, DVD movies, and music through your home theater or stereo system.

For ultimate sonic fidelity and the capacity to enjoy discrete, multichannel surround sound from select games and most DVD movies, Xbox 360 users can take advantage of the S-video AV cable's digital audio output using a Toslink optical digital audio cable (not included).

When connected to a compatible AV surround receiver and speaker system, the S-video AV cable can pass 2-channel digital audio (for stereo or Dolby Pro Logic listening) as well as full Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround signals to envelop you in rich, dynamic music and sound effects.

To connect your Xbox 360 console to your S-video–equipped TV:

  1. Turn off your console.
  2. Connect the AV connector on the S-video cable to the AV port on your console.
  3. Connect the S-video connector on the S-video cable to the S-video input on your TV. Leave the yellow composite video connector unconnected.

  5. Turn on your console. From the System area, you can change your display settings. Select the appropriate screen size and resolution for your TV.
