Account Management

Once you've created your Xbox Live account, check out these features and guidelines to get you started managing your account.

Pass Codes

You can set a pass code for your Xbox Live account if you are worried that a roommate or friend might try to mess up your stats on your favorite Xbox Live game. A pass code is a simple four-button sequence entered on your Xbox controller. If you forget your pass code, don't worry. Go to Account Management in the Xbox Dashboard and reset your pass code using the last four digits of the credit card linked to your XboxLive account.

To set a pass code:

  1. Go to Account Management and select your XboxLive account.
  2. Select Pass Code.
  3. Enter the new pass code you want. To disable pass code protection, enter a blank pass code.

Modifying Your Billing Information

You may want to switch credit cards at some point during your Xbox Live subscription. Or, Xbox Live may require you to update your billing information if your card information cannot be confirmed. If your billing information is invalid due to an expired card or overdraft, your access to Xbox Livewill be suspended until you provide new card information in your billing profile.

To make changes to your billing profile:

  2. Select Billing.
  3. Select Credit Card.

You will need a standard Visa, MasterCard, or a debit card branded with a Visa or MasterCard logo. Yes, you already paid for the first 12 months of service (if you boughta Starter Kit), but your account must be linked to a valid credit card. Your card will not be charged for any additional charges without your explicit consent for the duration of the 12 months of service.

If you want to use a debit card, a few restrictions apply:

  • Your debit card must have either a Visa or MasterCard logo.
  • Your debit card must not have restrictions on subscription-based or Internet purchases.
  • You must have more than 99 cents available in your debit card account.
  • The expiration date on your debit card cannot be the same month and year as the date you set up your account.

If you do not know if your debit card has restrictions on subscription-based or Internet purchases, contact the financial institution that issued the card for more information.

Opting In or Out of Information Sharing

You have the opportunity to opt in or opt out of getting more information from Microsoft and third-party publishers. This is a super-important decision, because if you opt in, you’ll receive regular communications from Xbox Live about new games, new content downloads, tournaments, contests, events, sweepstakes, and more. One of the best parts of Xbox Live is all the great things we provide for members to make the service more and more fun, but you have to opt in to receive them. Also, be sure to give us an accurate e-mail address to get all of this extra info.

To opt in or out:

  1. From the Xbox Dashboard, select Xbox Live.
  2. Select Account Management.
  3. Select Billing.
  4. Select your account and enter the last four digits of the credit card number used for that account.
  5. Select Information Sharing.

For Microsoft and our partners, choose Yes if you'd like to receive information about other products. ChooseNo if you don't want to receive this information about other products from Microsoft and/or our partners.

Parental Controls and Account Settings

The parental controls that you (or your parents) set for your Xbox console apply to Xbox Live games. If you've set the game rating at Teen (see your Xbox Instruction Manual for how to do this), you don't have to worry about your kid accidentally playing a Mature title just because it's Xbox Live enabled. For more information about game parental controls, see How To Set Parental Controls.

Parents, or any account owner, can also disable voice communication and downloadable content with fees. With Voice disabled, you cannot hear or talk to anyone on Xbox Live. With premium purchases disabled, no downloads or other purchases that would be billed to your credit card are allowed.

To disable voice communication or premium purchases:

  1. Go to Account Management and select your XboxLive account.
  2. Select Account Settings.
  3. Select Voice or Premium Purchases to enable or disable these settings.
