Q: What is the new Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack subscription?

A: Perfect for families, the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack offers four 12-month Xbox LIVE Gold memberships for less than the price of two. Family Pack subscribers also receive exclusive benefits and family conveniences, including access to the new Family Center for family account and online settings management, Activity Monitoring reports on Xbox.com, the ability to purchase and gift Microsoft Points Allowances to your children, and family-friendly content and discounts.

Q: How much does an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack subscription cost?

A: An Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack subscription costs US$99.99 – you get four 12-month Xbox LIVE Gold memberships for less than the price of two.

Q: I have more than four people in my family. Is there an option to add more people to a Family Pack?

A: Currently, the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack will only include four Xbox LIVE Gold accounts, but we’re looking forward to the community’s feedback and it’s something we may evolve in the future.

Q: Can I purchase an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack at my local retail store?

A: The Family Pack is only offered online through the Xbox LIVE Dashboard or Xbox.com

Converting to an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack

Q: I am currently an Xbox LIVE Gold member. If I have time remaining on my current subscription, do I receive a discount on an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack?

A: We will give existing Xbox LIVE Gold members a prorated discount on the purchase of a Family Pack. For each month remaining on your current Xbox LIVE Gold subscription, we will reduce the purchase price of a Family Pack by $5. For example, if you have six months of your Gold subscription remaining, you qualify for a $30 discount and will only be charged $69.99 at the time of purchase. If you have 20 months or more of your current Xbox LIVE Gold subscription remaining, you can upgrade to an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack for free. You will not receive a refund for any remaining subscription time in excess of 20 months.

Q: Can I add existing Xbox LIVE Gold members to my Family Pack? For example, my kids are already Xbox LIVE Gold members.

A: Yes. When an existing Xbox LIVE Gold member is added to a Family Pack, the remaining time on their Gold membership benefits the whole family! For every two months remaining on their current Gold membership, the entire family receives an extra month of Xbox LIVE Gold. For example, if your child has six months remaining on their existing Xbox LIVE Gold membership, when you add him/her to your Family Pack, all four of the individual Xbox LIVE Gold accounts available in your Family Pack will be extended by an additional three months. If you have two children who have four and six months of Gold remaining, respectively, on their existing Xbox LIVE Gold subscriptions, all four of the individual Xbox LIVE Gold accounts available in your Family Pack will be extended by an additional five months.

Q: Everyone in my family is already an Xbox LIVE Gold member. Is there a limit to how long my Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack subscription can be?

A: An Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack subscription cannot exceed 36 months. If your family members have more than 72 months of Xbox LIVE Gold membership remaining combined when they are added to the Xbox LIVE Gold family pack, any remaining time on their subscriptions in excess of the 72 months will be cancelled and you will not receive a refund for any time beyond 72 months.

Q: One of my family members currently only has a Zune account. Can they be added to my Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack?

A: Yes! If you have a Zune account, you have an Xbox LIVE account as well. To add them to your Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, all you need to do is recover their Zune account on an Xbox 360 console using their Windows Live ID email and password. Once recovered, their account will be updated for Xbox LIVE and they will be able to create their own Avatar and choose a Gamertag. Now you can easily add them to your Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack and they can take advantage of all the benefits of an Xbox LIVE Gold membership including streaming music via Zune music on your Xbox 360 and watching movies via Netflix.

Q What is Family Center?

A: The Family Center is a single destination where you can manage all of your family's (everyone in the Family Pack) Xbox LIVE Gold memberships and online Family Settings. The Family Center is also where you access the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack-exclusive features like the ability to gift Microsoft Points Allowances to your family and view Activity Monitoring reports. Because you can access Family Center on the console and on Xbox.com, you can manage your family’s accounts from the PC in your office, at home, or anywhere you have internet access.

Q: What are Activity Monitoring reports?

A: Activity Monitoring reports are details of your family’s Xbox LIVE activity, including when your child plays a game and for how long (including what game titles they were playing), or when your child watched Netflix and for how long. Activity Monitoring reports are designed to help encourage discussions about safer, healthier, and more balanced digital entertainment habits. They are accessible on Xbox.com so you can access them from the PC in your office, at home, or anywhere you have internet access.

Q: What is unified billing?

A: With the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, only the primary Family Pack member (often a parent or caregiver) may make purchases on Xbox LIVE for other Family Pack members, so that you can more easily manage your family’s entertainment budget.

Q: What are Microsoft Points Allowances?

A: While an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack utilizes unified billing, the primary Family Pack member has the option to purchase Microsoft points and give them to other Family Pack members, who can use them to buy movies, shows, games and more on Xbox LIVE.

Q: Why are you only making some of these tools available for those with an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack subscription? Shouldn’t these tools be provided to everyone?

A: With the launch of Kinect we are enhancing the core Family Settings tools for all Xbox LIVE members, no matter what their subscription level is. The additional benefits provided to Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack members are the incredible value of four 12-month Gold memberships for less than the price of two plus added conveniences, such as the ability to purchase and give Microsoft Points to kids and family-friendly discounts.

Managing your Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack

Q: Can I change the people who are on my Family Pack after I purchase it?

A: Yes! However, there are limitations on the number of individual people that can be added or removed from the Family Pack subscription per year. Also, once someone has been removed from the Family Pack, they will not be able to be re-added for a period of time.

Q: How do you determine who the primary account owner, adults, and kids are in a Family Pack?

A: The primary account holder will be the person who purchases or activates the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, likely a main caregiver. Please note that the Family Pack can only be purchased by adults over the legal billing age in their region (18+ in most regions). When the primary account holder first sets up each family member’s Xbox LIVE Gold account, intelligent default privacy and activity settings are applied to each profile based on the person’s age: child (13 and under in the US), teen (13-18), or adult (18+ in the US).

Q: Can I customize the intelligent default settings of an account, no matter what the age associated with the account is?

A: Yes, the primary account holder will have the ability to customize the parental controls and other settings of the Family Pack members’ accounts.

Q: If someone leaves the household – for example a child who leaves for college – will they still be a part of my Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack?

A: Yes, if a Family Pack member leaves home to go to college, they can simply recover their account on a different console and will still remain a part of the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, as long as they reside in the same country as the primary account holder.

Q: I have multiple consoles in my family. Does my Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack have to reside only one of those consoles?

A: When an individual is added to an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, that person’s Xbox LIVE account must be on the same console as the primary account holder. However, once they are a part of your Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, that person could recover their account on a different console and still remain a part of the Family Pack, as long as they reside in the same country as the primary account holder.

Q: Could a group of friends or roommates share an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack?

A: The Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack is really designed for families. Only the primary account holder may make purchases against their own billing account, which is designed to help families better manage their entertainment budget. The primary account holder will also receive Activity Monitoring reports, and have the ability to access online Family Settings for other members in the Family Pack. As a result, the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack may not work well for groups of friends or roommates.

Q: If my child receives a Microsoft Points card as a gift and redeems it on the console, who do the Points belong to?

A: The Microsoft Points would be credited directly to the account of the person redeeming the Microsoft Points card, in this case your child, as opposed to the primary account holder’s account. If your child were then to purchase a movie or Xbox LIVE Arcade game with his or her points, they would be subtracted from their individual account. Don’t forget that the primary account holder has the option of purchasing and giving Microsoft Points Allowances to other Family Pack members as well.

Q: If I purchase an Xbox LIVE Arcade game, does it belong to everyone in the family?

A: Purchased content such as games and movies are licensed both to the console it was purchased on, and the individual Gold member that purchased it. So if, for example, your child were to buy an Xbox LIVE Arcade game on your home console, anyone on your console can play it. Additionally, if they leave for college, they could recover their account on another Xbox 360 in their dorm room and be able to play the game when logged into their account from that Xbox 360.
