Looten Duke Walkthrough
Howdy, Stranger, and welcome back to Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath™. So you just nabbed Filthy Hands Floyd, and now you've got to deal with a couple more outlaws before leavin' the comfortable environs o' Gizzard Gulch and headin' to the next town. The first is Looten Duke, a machine-gun totin' outlaw with his own fortress and small army of thugs (including a couple with mortar cannons). Shall we?
Looten's Lair
A two-thug patrol is circling the perimeter of the fortress, so hide in the tall grass and take them out with Bolomites. There's all kinds of ammo around the fortress (with the exception of Chippunks, which should be used sparingly). You might want to leave yourself some extra ammo lying around for the actual fight with Duke; the fight might take you back outside, eventually.
Duke's a well-armed son of a buzzard, and he's surrounded by loyal toadies (and when I say "toadies," I mean toadies … as in, they're big toads). The Duke won't even reveal himself until you take out all of his boys, so your first order of business is finding all the ammo you can. Two are outside, but the rest are inside—and the door ain't exactly open. Smash through it, and expect to be spotted immediately. You can let a couple of thugs chase you outside and deal with them, but they probably won't follow too far. Instead, lay down a few Fuzzles just outside the door and fire a Chippunk directly into the doorway (the thugs won't go for one that's outside; they're stupid but they have their orders). Once the Fuzzles hit, Bolomite the goons and bounty 'em fast—if you let them Fuzzle out too long, they die and are worth less dough.
From here, I found it easiest to simply charge in and start shooting, but you might prefer a more careful path that leaves you with more live bounties than I managed to nab. The fortress has a few traps, like a platform that guards walk over repeatedly that can be released to drop them to the group. Alternatively, go in loaded with Bolomites and wrap them all up.
Once the ground level thugs are gone, Duke finally shows up—for a cut scene. When Stranger reminds Duke he'll be sharing a jail cell—and perhaps the, er, affections—of Blisterz Booty, Duke flees in terror and leaves Stranger to face a pair of mortar-firing lieutenants. The lieutenants won't come down from their platform, so you've got two options. One, you can simply run up to one of the small towers with sturdy rooftops that protects you from enemy mortar fire and then unload with the Fuzzles. The classier method is to run into the ground floor of the building they occupy and turn right into the second room. There you can find some ropes that take you up to the lieutenants, who are easily Bolomited at close range. (You want to come back here after Duke is bountied to nab all the loot in the tower, too, but for now you've got one last fight.)
Duke, unlike Filthy Hands Floyd, is pretty much immune to Bolomites, so you have to use other methods. If you're feeling tough, you might try beating him up in third person, though this is risky—the guy packs a really big gun. You might also try to stun him with Zappflies, though again this is definitely the more dangerous way to go.
Since it's darn near impossible not to go for the "dead" option, lure Duke outside of the fortress to the area you previously littered with Thudslugs, ready to pick up. Just keep slamming him with 'slugs, healing when possible, and he eventually goes down. Alternatively, if you're looking for coolness and style points, let Duke position himself in front of one of the many convenient whirring fans of doom (I guess if you smell like Looten Duke, you want a seriously powerful ventilation system). One Thudslug knocks the ugly outlaw into the Oddworld version of a food processor.
Now just pick up any loot packs (don't forget to go back to the climbing rope to fully explore Duke's base; there's a lot of free moolah in here). The new route back to town opens up in the rear of the base.
Now it's time to catch up on the plot, cash in the bounty on Looten Duke, and get ready for the next outlaw—Blisterz's big brother Boilz. By Ben Barker |
