Game Ratings for Xbox 360

Game ratings let you determine the games that can be played on your Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system.

Your Console Settings apply to everyone on the Xbox 360 console; they are not profile-specific.

To configure settings for game ratings on your Xbox 360 console:

  1. Start from the System area of the Xbox Dashboard or—if you're using the Xbox 360 system for the first time—from the Initial Setup Complete screen. Select Family Settings, Console Controls.
  2. Select Game Ratings. The default setting is "Allow All Games."
  3. Select the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating level you deem appropriate:
    • Mature: Select this option to permit the console to play games with this rating or lower. Games rated M have content that may be suitable for ages 17 and older. Games in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language.
    • Teen: Select this option to permit the console to play games with this rating or lower. Games rated T have content that may be suitable for ages 13 and older. Games in this category may contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, and/or infrequent use of strong language.
    • Everyone 10+: Select this option to permit the console to play games with this rating or lower. Games rated E10+ have content that may be suitable for ages 10 and older. Games in this category may contain more cartoon, fantasy, or mild violence, mild language, and/or minimal suggestive themes.
    • Everyone: Select this option to permit the console to play games with this rating or lower. Games rated E have content that may be suitable for ages 6 and older. Games in this category may contain minimal cartoon, fantasy, or mild violence and/or infrequent use of mild language.
    • Early Childhood: Select this option to permit the console to play only games with this rating. Games rated EC have content that may be suitable for ages 3 and older. Games in this category contain no material that parents would find inappropriate.
  4. To set a pass code that prevents unauthorized changes to your settings, select Set Pass Code from the Console Controls screen and follow the on-screen instructions. For more info, see Pass Codes for Xbox 360.
  5. After you've set your code, select Done from the Console Controls screen. When prompted, select Yes, save changes to put your new settings into effect.

Tip

If your settings need only apply to select members of the household, equip all other users with your pass code to permit their unrestricted use of the console.
