Migrate Your Account Using Original Xbox Information

If you have a Windows Live ID (formerly known as a Passport Network account) but haven't linked it to your gamertag, use the procedure known as gamertag recovery to migrate your Xbox Live® account to your Xbox 360™ console. To verify your account, you'll need the following information (available from the Xbox Dashboard of your original Xbox system):

  • Last four digits of the credit card you used to create your account
  • Cardholder name
  • Phone number
  • Postal (ZIP) code

Note

Once you've migrated your account to Xbox 360, you'll no longer be able to access Account Management on your original Xbox console. Don't worry—you'll still be able to play games on Xbox Live with either system! You'll just need to manage your account on your Xbox 360 console.

For more information, see our Xbox 360 Account Management FAQ.

To recover your gamertag from Xbox Live:

  1. With your Xbox 360 console connected to Xbox Live, turn it on with no disc in the tray and sign out (X) of any offline profiles.

For information about home networking, see Introduction to Home Networking.
  2. Go to the Xbox Live area of the Xbox Dashboard and select Recover Gamertag from Xbox Live.

Xbox Dashboard: Recover Gamertag from Xbox Live
  3. Select Gamertag and enter the gamertag for the membership that you're migrating to your console. When you've finished typing, select Done, and then select Next.

    Tip

You can enter information using either a USB keyboard plugged into a controller port or your Xbox 360 controller and the on-screen virtual keyboard.

  4. Enter the following information on the Confirm Identity for <Gamertag> screen, all of which is available from the Xbox Dashboard of your original Xbox® video game system:
    • Last four digits of the credit card you used to create your account
    • Cardholder name
    • Phone number
    • Postal (ZIP) code

Need help collecting your info? We'll walk you through it.

When you've entered your information, select Next.
  5. When asked: You need a Windows Live ID (formerly known as a Passport Network account) to sign up for Xbox Live. Do you have one?, select Yes, I do.
  6. Enter the e-mail address associated with your Windows Live ID.

    Note

Unlike your gamertag, the e-mail address associated with your Windows Live ID will never be visible to other gamers. We require an e-mail address only to authenticate your membership.

  7. Enter the password associated with your Windows Live ID.

If you're a minor, you will be asked to supply a Windows Live ID for your parent, who will need to be present to complete the procedure. Your parent will need his or her own Windows Live ID and a valid e-mail address.

If you've forgotten your password or need help determining which e-mail address you associated with your Windows Live ID, see Xbox 360: Invalid E-mail Address or Password.
  8. Select Sign In.
  9. Upon successful sign-in, your gamer profile will be downloaded from Xbox Live to your console. Then you're good to go!
