Connection Tests: Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)

For an optimal Xbox Live experience, your router or gateway must be able to handle a type of Internet traffic known as ICMP port-unreachable traffic. ICMP stands for Internet Control Message Protocol. It's not important to know much about ICMP, but you should be sure that your router or gateway properly handles this kind of traffic. If it doesn't, you won't be able to connect to Xbox Live.

The ICMP test evaluates how your router or gateway will respond to a particular type of ICMP packet. If the test does not indicate Confirmed, your device is not properly handling ICMP packets. Typically this is not a setting you can change, though you may be able to update your device's firmware from the device manufacturer.

To move past this error, take one of the following actions:

  • Check to see if you can update your device's firmware from the device manufacturer and retry the test.
  • Remove your existing router or gateway from your network and use a direct modem connection for Xbox Live access.
  • Replace your existing router or gateway with a designated Xbox Live Compatible router or gateway.
