Use Equipment that Works with Xbox Live

The following equipment has been tested with XboxLive and can be used to connect to Xbox Live with Videotron:

Com 21 DOXport
Motorola CyberSURF
Motorola SURFboard
Samsung InfoRanger
Scientific Atlanta Webstar

Choose your connection type

Your Xbox console can be connected to Xbox Live via a direct or router connection with your Videotron Internet Service. For more information, choose the way you want to connect to Xbox Live.

When using the Videotron Internet service, the type of connection you choose will determine what modifications (if any) need to be made in the Xbox Dashboard. Note the following:

  • If you already have a PC and are using a direct connection type to your Xbox console, you must perform a cable modem reset when switching devices. Or, you can insert the MAC address of your PC into the Xbox Dashboard. With this connection, you will not be able to access the Internet with your Xbox console and PC at the same time.
  • If you already have a PC and you are using a router connection, no change to the Xbox Dashboard settings is required. However, if this is a new router installation, you must perform a cable modem reset when connecting your router. Or, you can insert the MAC address of your PC into your router. See your router manufacturer's instructions for more information.
  • If you are connecting multiple devices to the Videotron network via a hub or switch, you will need to contact Videotron to receive additional IP addresses.

Direct Connection with Videotron

For a direct connection, you will need a standard Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors. To directly connect your hardware:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Videotron cable modem, and, if you have one, your PC) before connecting any cables.

You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the cable modem to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using the Ethernet cable.
  4. Turn on your modem.
  5. Turn on your Xbox console, with no disc in the disc tray.
  6. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings,Network Settings, and thenConnect.

Your settings are now used to connect to Xbox Live. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to XboxLive," congratulations! You are connected to Xbox Live. To create your Xbox Live account, seeAccount Creation, or for more information about managing your account, see Account Management.

If you cannot connect to Xbox Live, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Videotron for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.

Router Connection with Videotron

To connect to Xbox Live with a router connection, you'll need three Ethernet cables with RJ-45 connectors and a cable/DSL router. To share with a PC, you'll also need an Ethernet NIC installed in the PC.

To share your Videotron Internet connection with your PC using a router:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, DSL/cable router, Videotron cable modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.

You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the cable modem to the Ethernet in port on the DSL/cable router using an Ethernet cable.
  4. Connect one of the Ethernet out ports on the cable/DSL router to the Ethernet in port on the PC NIC using an Ethernet cable.
  5. Connect another Ethernet out port on the cable/DSL router to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using an Ethernet cable.
  6. Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall jack out. This means, first turn on your modem, then your router, then your PC.
  7. Verify that the PC can access the Internet. If not, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Videotron.
  8. Turn on your Xbox console with no disc in the disc tray.
  9. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings,Network Settings, and thenConnect.

Note With a router connection, you do not need to turn on your PC to access XboxLive from your Xbox console.

Your settings are now used to connect to XboxLive. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to Xbox Live," congratulations! You are connected to XboxLive. To create your Xbox Live account, see Account Creation, or for more information about managing your account, see Account Management.

If you cannot connect to Xbox Live, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Videotron for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.

Finding and using your PC's MAC address for other devices

Videotron requires that each device using the service be identified by a MAC address. If you've used Videotron to connect your PC to the Internet, your PC's MAC address is already registered with Videotron. You may power cycle your modem to clear this registration prior to connecting your Xbox or router. Or, you can configure your Xbox console or router to use your PC's MAC address.

Finding your PC's MAC address

To obtain your PC's MAC address in Windows 98 or Windows Me:

  1. From your PC, click the Microsoft WindowsStart button and select Run.
  2. Type winipcfg and select OK.
  3. In the window that is displayed, click the More Info button.

The PC's MAC address is listed in Adapter Address.

To obtain your PC's MAC address in Windows 2000 or Windows XP:

  1. From your PC, click the Microsoft Windows Start button and select Connect To, then Show All Connections.
  2. From the Network Connections screen, right-click Local Area Connection and selectStatus.
  3. From the Local Area Connection Status screen, select the Support tab and click Details.

Your PC's MAC address is listed as Physical Address.

Using your PC's MAC address for your Xbox console

To set up your Xbox console to use the same MAC address as your PC:

  1. Turn on your PC and find your PC's MAC address.
  2. Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
  3. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, and then Network Settings.

These steps assume you cannot connect to Xbox Live until you finish configuring your Xbox console to use your PC's MAC address.
  4. From the Network Settings screen, select Advanced.
  5. From the Advanced screen, select MAC Address.
  6. Enter the MAC address of your PC in the Xbox Dashboard. Do not enter any dashes, just letters and numbers.
  7. To attempt connection to Xbox Live using the new MAC address, return (Back) to the Network Settings screen, and then select Connect.
