Choose your connection type

For Verizon DSL, we suggest you use either a direct connection or a router connection.

Direct Connection with Verizon

For a direct connection, you will need a standard Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors. To directly connect your hardware:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Verizon DSL modem, and, if you have one, your PC) before connecting any cables.

You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using the Ethernet cable.
  4. Turn on your modem.
  5. Turn on your Xbox console, with no disc in the disc tray.
  6. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, then Network Settings.
  7. If you have have been provided specific PPPoE settings from Verizon to connect to the Internet, you must configure your Xbox console to use PPPoE settings provided by Verizon. If Verizon does not require specific PPPoE settings, they will not provide any PPPoE information to you, and you do not need to enter specific PPPoE information in the Xbox console.See the documentation you received with your high-speed Internet service from Verizon for more information.
  8. After completing step 7 for your account, from the Xbox Dashboard, return (Back) to Network Settings, and then choose Connect.

Your settings are now used to connect to Xbox Live. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to Xbox Live," congratulations! You are connected to Xbox Live.To create your Xbox Live account, see Account Creation, or for more information about managing your account, see Account Management.

If you cannot connect to Xbox Live, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Verizon for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.

Router Connection with Verizon

To connect to Xbox Live with a router connection, you'll need three Ethernet cables with RJ-45 connectors and a cable/DSL router. To share with a PC, you'll also need an Ethernet NIC installed in the PC.

To share your Verizon Internet connection with your PC using a router:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, DSL router, Verizon DSL modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.

You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet in port on the router using an Ethernet cable.
  4. Connect one of the Ethernet out ports on the router to the Ethernet in port on the PC NIC using an Ethernet cable.
  5. Connect another Ethernet out port on the router to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using an Ethernet cable.
  6. Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall jack out. This means, first turn on your modem, then your router, then your PC.
  7. If you have have been provided specific PPPoE settings from Verizon to connect to the Internet, you must configure yourrouter to use PPPoE settings provided by Verizon. For more information about configuring your router, see your router documentation.

If Verizon does not require specific PPPoE settings, they will not provide any PPPoE information to you, and you do not need to enterspecific PPPoE information in your router.See the documentation you received with your high-speed Internet service from Verizon for more information.

Windows ICS Connection with Verizon

A Windows ICS connection uses Microsoft® Windows® Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS lets your Xbox and your PC use your Internet connection at the same time, but you must connect your Xbox console through your PC, and always turn on your PC before playing games on Xbox Live. Xbox Live is supported through Windows ICS for Windows XP, Windows Me, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows 98 SE.

To connect multiple devices to the Internet via a single Internet connection, one PC must be running Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Windows XP with Internet Connection Sharing installed. Multiple devices (like the Xbox console) on your LAN can then gain access to the Internet through the connection on the computer with Internet Connection Sharing.

Note ICS is a built-in feature of Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, and Windows Me, and is not a component available for download.

Note You must use a Windows ICS connection if your modem has no Ethernet port, such as a USB-only model. These instructions assume you have a USB-only modem. You must already have an Ethernet NIC installed in your PC for this connection.

  1. Before you connect any cables, turn off your Xbox console, modem, and PC. If you have an external modem, unplug it from its power sourceto turn it off.
  2. Take your USB cable and connect one end to the USB out port on the modem. Then connectthe other end to one of the available USB ports on your PC.
  3.

  4. Take your Ethernet cable and connect one end to the Ethernet out port on the PC NIC. Then connectthe other end to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console. Most Windows ICS connections require a crossover (not a standard, straight-through) Ethernet cable for this, although some may require a standard cable. See your modem documentation for more information.

  1. Turn on your modem and your PC.
  2. Configure Windows ICS to share your Internet connection. For more information, see your Windows documentation.
  3. Once ICS is configured, make sure that your PC can access the Internet.
  4. Turn on your Xbox console with no disc in the disc tray.
  5. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Xbox Live. Or, play an Xbox Liveenabled game and choose the option for Xbox Liveplay.

If you cannot connect to Xbox Live, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Verizon for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.
