Set Up Your Connection

Choose your connection type

For Rogers high-speed Internet, you can set up multiple computer access. Alternately, you can use either a direct connection or a router connection. For more information, choose the way you want to connect to Xbox Live.

Note A PC may be required to activate high-speed Internet service.

Before following any connection steps below, you should print or save an offline version of this page, as you may need to disconnect your PC from the Internet.

Also, before following any connection steps, see your Xbox Instruction Manual for important safety information.

Rogers Multiple Computer Access

A shared connection using Rogers Multiple Computer Access allows you to connect yourPC and Xbox console simultaneously to your cable modem through a simple network hub. To use this option, you must subscribe to Multiple Computer Access service from Rogers. This service allows your cable modem to permit a device such as an Xbox console or another PC to connect to Rogers Internet service.

Direct Connection with Rogers

For a direct connection, you will need a standard Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors. To directly connect your hardware:

Note To make sure you can connect your PC to the Internet after connecting your Xbox console to Xbox Live, you must have used your PC to connect to Rogers Internet service through your cable modem at least once before connecting your Xbox console to Xbox Live with a direct connection. If you have a PC, you must let your cable modem provide your PC with an IP address before you connect your Xbox console to Rogers Internet service. If you connect your Xbox console to the Internet before ever connecting your PC, you will not be able to connect your PC. You must contact Rogers customer service to have the IP address released from your Xbox console before you can connect your PC to the Internet again.

To connect your Xbox console directly to Rogers Internet service:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Rogers cable modem, and, if you have one, your PC) before connecting any cables.

You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using the Ethernet cable.
  4. Turn on your modem.
  5. Turn on your Xbox console, with no disc in the disc tray.
  6. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Xbox Live.
  7. If you have previously connected to the Internet with your PC through Rogers, you must configure your Xbox console to use your PC's MAC address. You will not be able to connect your PC and your Xbox console to the Internet at the same time.
  8. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, Network Settings, and thenConnect.

Your settings are now used to connect to Xbox Live. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to Xbox Live," congratulations! You are connected to XboxLive. To create your Xbox Live account, see Account Creation, or for more information about managing your account, see Account Management.

If you cannot connect to Xbox Live, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Rogers for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.

Router Connection with Rogers

To connect to Xbox Live with a router connection, you'll need three Ethernet cables with RJ-45 connectors and a cable router. To share with a PC, you'll also need an Ethernet NIC installed in the PC.

To share your Rogers Internet connection with your PC using a router:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, cable router, Rogers cable modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.

Note You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off. Also, leave your modem turned off for 5-10 minutes before turning iton again.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet in port on the router using an Ethernet cable.
  4. Connect one of the Ethernet out ports on the router to the Ethernet in port on the PC NIC using an Ethernet cable.
  5. Connect another Ethernet out port on the router to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using an Ethernet cable.
  6. Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall jack out. This means, first turn on your modem, then your router, then your PC.
  7. Verify that the PC can access the Internet. For other troubleshooting information, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Rogers.
  8. Turn on your Xbox console with no disc in the disc tray.

Troubleshooting your Connection with Rogers

Modem Swaps

Switching your cable modem for another cable modem type will not provide you with any additional speed advantage. All cable modems supplied by Rogers provide an equally fast gaming experience on Xbox Live. As a result, Rogers will only arrange for modem swaps if your modem is diagnosed as defective.

Connecting to Xbox Live

The network troubleshooter will automatically provide you with an error message and suggested solutionsfor your connection.Note the error message title (such as No Connection, Network Error, IP Conflict) to help troubleshoot the error, and follow the suggestions provided by the network troubleshooter.

If you have a direct connection and have previously connected to the Internet with your PC through Rogers, you may need to configure your Xbox console to use your PC's MAC address.

Note You do not need to use your PC's MAC address for your Xbox console or router for a router connection; the following steps apply only for a direct connection.

Finding and using your PC's MAC address for other devices

Rogers requires that each device using the service be identified by a MAC address. If you've used Rogers to connect your PC to the Internet, your PC's MAC address is already registered with Rogers. You can use this MAC address to instead connect your Xbox console to Xbox Live through Rogers.

These steps assume you cannot connect to Xbox Live until you finish configuring your Xbox console to use your PC's MAC address.
  3. The 12-digit number at the bottom-right corner of the Network Settings screen is the MAC address of your Xbox console. Do not change your Xbox console MAC address; just write it down so that you can use it later.

Using your PC's MAC address for your Xbox console

  1. Turn on your PC and find your PC's MAC address.
  2. Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
