Use Equipment that Works with Xbox Live
The following equipment has been tested with Xbox Liveand can be used to connect to Xbox Live with Bell Sympatico:
- Nortel Ethernet Modem (DSL modem)
- Alcatel Speed Touch Ethernet modem (DSL modem)
- Efficient Networks Speedstream 5360 (DSL modem)
- Efficient Networks Speedstream 6300 Wireless DSL Gateway, with Bell Canada Release 3.0.2 (004-E771-A3Z) firmware (home networking modem)
- Sympatico™ High Speed and Sympatico™ High Speed Ultra Internet Services
Choose Your Connection Type
Bell Sympatico DSL provides either an Ethernet or a USB-based modem. If you have an Ethernet modem, we suggest you use either a direct connection or a router connection.
Note A PC may be required to activate high-speed Internet service.
Note If you have a USB-based modem, you must use a Windows ICS connection to connect to Xbox Live.
Direct Connection with Bell Sympatico

For a direct connection, you will need a standard Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors. To directly connect your hardware:
- Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Bell Sympatico DSL modem, and, if you have one, your PC) before connecting any cables.
You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
- If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
- Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using the Ethernet cable.
- Turn on your modem.
- Turn on your Xbox console, with no disc in the disc tray.
- From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, and then Network Settings.
- Configure your Xbox console to use PPPoE settings provided by Bell Sympatico.
- From the Network Settings screen, choose Connect.
Your settingsare nowused to connect to Xbox Live. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to Xbox Live," congratulations! You are connected to Xbox Live. To create your Xbox Live account, see Account Creation, or for more information about managing your account, see Account Management.

Connection with the Bell Sympatico Wireless Home Networking Modem– Wired Connection

Note Before attempting to network your Xbox, make sure that your PC can connect to the Internet through the Wireless Home Networking Modem. If you want to connect to your Xbox console wirelessly, pleasesee thefollowing section, "Connection with the Bell Sympatico Wireless Home Networking modem – Wireless Connection." You will need an Xbox compatible wireless adapter to connect wirelessly to Xbox Live.
To connect to Xbox Live with the Wireless Home Networking Modem using an Ethernet cable:
- Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Wireless Home Networking Modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the four ports (labeled Ethernet 1-4) on the back of the Wireless Home Networking modem to your Xbox console.
- Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall jack out. This means, first your Wireless Home Networking Modem (wait for the DSL light to go solid), and then your Xbox. Turn on your Xbox console with no disc in the disc tray.
- From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings,Network Settings, and thenConnect.
Note With the Wireless Home Networking Modem, you do not need to turn on your PC to access Xbox Live from your Xbox console.
Your settingsare nowused to connect to Xbox Live. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to Xbox Live," congratulations! You are connected to XboxLive. To create your Xbox Live account, see Account Creation, or for more information about managing your account, see Account Management.

Connection with the Bell Sympatico Wireless Home Networking Modem– Wireless Connection

Note Before attempting wireless networking with your Xbox, make sure that your PC can connect to the Internet through the Wireless Home Networking Modem and thatyou have enabled wireless access on your Wireless Home Networking Modem. Consult your Quick Setup Guide for instructions. Write down the channel (default channel is 11), SSID (network name), and WEP key (default WEP is 128-bit encryption andis 26 hexadecimal characters long) from your Wireless Home Networking Modem Quick Setup Guide.
To connect to Xbox Live with the Wireless Home Networking Modem:
- Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Wireless Home Networking Modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.
- Turn on your devices in order from the wall jack out. This means, first your Wireless Home Networking Modem (wait for the DSL light to go solid), and then your Xbox.
- According to your adapter manufacturer's instructions, connect your wireless-to-Ethernet bridge to your Xbox console.
- From the Xbox Dashboard, select Settings,Network Settings, Advanced, and Wireless.
- From the Wireless Status screen, select Settings.
Note If you receive a message saying your wireless adapter was not found, your wireless adapter may not be Xbox Live Compatible. If your wireless adapter is not Xbox Live Compatible, you will not be able to configure it using the Xbox Dashboard. Please see Home Networking Equipment for a listing of devices that have earned the Xbox Live Compatible logo.
- Your Wireless Home Networking Modem can be configured to either broadcast (default setting)or not broadcast its SSID.
If your it is configured to broadcast its SSID, see step 6a below. If it is configured to not broadcast its SSID, see step 6b below.The Xbox Dashboard will list the SSIDs that your Xbox Compatible wireless bridge finds. If the Xbox Dashboard doesn’t show your router's SSID, your router isn’t broadcasting the SSID.
a. If the SSID is broadcast, select the SSID (that you wrote down) of your Wireless Home Networking Modem from the list of SSIDs on the Select Network screen.
b. If the SSID is not broadcast, select OTHER from the list on the Select Network screen. Then enter the SSID (that you wrote down) using the Xbox Dashboard virtual keyboard.
- From the Wireless Settings screen, select Network Mode as Infrastructure. Select Security Type and configure the Xbox Compatible wireless bridge with the same security settings (default is 128-bit WEP; 64-bit WEP and no security are also options) as your Wireless Home Networking Modem.
Important The Xbox Dashboard supports 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption for Xbox Compatible wireless bridges. Microsoft highly recommends that you secure your wireless network by taking advantage of 128-bit WEP encryption. However, the use of WEP is not required for any Xbox Compatible wireless bridge to connect to a wireless router.
- Press A to save the new settings, and then B to go back.
- From the Wireless Status screen, check that your Xbox console is connected to the network name (SSID) specified in Step 6.
- Press B twice to go back. From the Network Settings screen, select Connect to connect to Xbox Live.
- From the Connect Status screen, verify that the Xbox console connects to Xbox Live.
Note With the Wireless Home Networking Modem, you do not need to turn on your PC to access Xbox Live from your Xbox console.

Router Connection with Bell Sympatico

To connect to Xbox Live with a router connection, you'll need three Ethernet cables with RJ-45 connectors and a cable/DSL router. To share with a PC, you'll also need an Ethernet NIC installed in the PC. For more information about home networking with Bell Sympatico, see http://www.homenetworking.sympatico.ca.
To share your Bell Sympatico Internet connection with your PC using a router:
- Turn off your devices (Xbox console, cable/DSL router, Bell Sympatico DSL modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.
You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
If your router, Bell Sympatico DSL modem, and PC are already set up and functioning correctly, please proceed to step 5.
- If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
- Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet in port on the router using an Ethernet cable.
- Connect one of the Ethernet out ports on the router to the Ethernet in port on the PC NIC using an Ethernet cable.
- Connect another Ethernet out port on the router to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using an Ethernet cable.
- Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall jack out. This means, first turn on your modem, then your router, then your PC.
- Configure your router to use PPPoE settings provided by Bell Sympatico. For more information about configuring your router, see your router documentation.
- Verify that the PC can access the Internet.
- Turn on your Xbox console with no disc in the disc tray.
- From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, Network Settings, and thenConnect.
Note With a router connection, you do not need to turn on your PC to access XboxLive from your Xbox console.
Your settingsare nowused to connect to Xbox Live. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to Xbox Live,"congratulations! Windows ICS Connection with Bell Sympatico

Note If you have a modem with no Ethernet port, such as a USB-based modem, you mustuse a Windows ICS connection to connect to Xbox Live. These instructions assume you have a USB modem.
To connect to Xbox Live with a Windows ICS connection, you'll need:
- standard telephone cable (to connect the modem to the telephone wall jack)
- One cross-over Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connector
- One USB cable with USB connector
- A PC with an Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) installed.

To share your Bell Sympatico Internet connection through your PC using Windows ICS:
- Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Bell Sympatico DSL modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.
You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
- Connect the modem to thetelephone wall jack.
- Connect the PC to the USB-based modem with the USB cable. If you've previously connected to the Internet with your PC, this should already be connected.
- Connect the Ethernet port of the PC NIC to the Ethernet port of the Xbox console using the cross-over Ethernet cable.
- Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall jack out. This means, first turn on your modem,and then your PC.
- Verify that the PC can access the Internet.
- Configure your PC to use Windows ICS to share your Internet connection with your Xbox console. For more information, see Using Windows ICS.
- From the Xbox Dashboard, choose XboxLive. Or, play an Xbox Live enabled game and choose the option for Xbox Live play.
Note With a Windows ICS connection, you must turn on your PC to access Xbox Live from your Xbox console.

The network troubleshooter at the connect screen will automatically provide you with an error message and suggested solutionsfor your connection.Please make a note of the error message title (such as No Connection, Network Error, IP Conflict) to help troubleshoot the error. Follow the suggestions provided by the network troubleshooter.
If you have previously connected to the Internet with your PC through Bell Sympatico, you may need to configure your Xbox console to use PPPoE settings provided by Bell Sympatico.
Configuring PPPoE Settings
For a direct connection, you must set the PPPoE setting provided by Bell Sympatico in the Xbox Dashboard to connect to Xbox Live.
- Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
- From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, and then Network Settings.
- From the Network Settings screen, select PPPoE Settings.
- Enter the PPPoE information provided by Bell Sympatico. This will be a B1xxxxxx and password. If you cannot find your B1 number and password, consult your Bell Sympatico User Guide or contact 310-SURF.
- To attempt connection to Xbox Live using the new PPPoE setting, return (Back) to the Network Settings screen, and then select Connect.
