Power Cycling

Having trouble getting connected to Xbox Live®? Power cycling your modem could be the solution. We’ve found that power cycling the modem actually resolves about 50 percent of cases in which players aren’t able to connect to Xbox Live.

What is power cycling?

In general, power cycling refers to the action of turning a device’s power off and then on again to restore functionality.

For Xbox Live, power cycling means power cycling your modem so that it recognizes that a new device (in this case, an Xbox console) has been connected.

When should I power cycle my modem?

As a rule, you should power cycle your modem any time you connect your Xbox console or your router to your modem.

How do I power cycle my modem?

To power cycle your modem:

  1. Turn off your modem.
  2. Unplug the modem from its power source.
  3. Wait three minutes.
  4. Plug the modem back into its power source.
  5. Turn on your modem.
  6. Wait two to three minutes to allow the modem to complete its power-on sequence.

Upon completion, attempt to reconnect to Xbox Live. If you are able to connect, it worked! If you still were not able to connect, the problem is likely something different. Don’t worry. Check out the Troubleshooting Connection Issues page, which provides a helpful list of other possible solutions. And if you have a router, make sure it's Xbox Live compatible.

If problems persist, contact Xbox Customer Support.

What error messages might apply?

The following are errors that may be resolved by executing a power cycle on your modem:

  • NETWORK ERROR
  • DHCP NOT FOUND
  • IP CONFLICT
  • GATEWAY
  • DNS ERROR
  • COMMUNICATION ERROR
