Gym Class Heroes

Published December 30, 2008

Their gold-selling album As Cruel As School Children had a lot to do with them winning the 2007 MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, but it's their new album, The Quilt, that expands the band's sound and makes them practically uncategorizable.

The band was founded by Travis McCoy (vocals) and drummer Matt McGinley in 1997. In 2004, guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo joined the band, and the quartet was completed the following year with bassist Eric Roberts. The band has released two EPs and four studio albums, with The Quilt having come out earlier this year.

"Everything that's happened to us in the past couple years has been a part of this bigger thing, so all the experiences that we've been through with success and everything is a patch in our quilt," McCoy explains. "We kind of had to blanket ourselves in all the hard work, and, in the end, everything paid off because we ended up with a pretty dope record."

The album features appearances from The-Dream, Estelle, Busta Rhymes, and McCoy's idol Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates fame. "I'm a huge Hall and Oates fan, so the fact that we worked with Daryl Hall makes that song ["Live Forever (Fly With Me)"] really personal to me," he says. The album released September 9 of 2008 on the Fueled by Ramen and Decaydance label, and is available wherever music is sold.
