Set Up Your Connection

Choose your connection type

For Shaw, you can set up a shared Internet connection. Alternately, we suggest you use either a direct connection or a router connection. For more information, http://support.shaw.ca/networks/networksetup.htm.

The standard Shaw High Speed Internet service offers customers two dynamic IP addresses. Shaw residential customers may request up to a total of five dynamic IP addresses. Either a hub or router can be used to connect your networked computers and devices to the Internet.

When using a hub with the Shaw High-Speed Internet service with only two devices (an Xbox console and a PC), no changes must be made to the Xbox software. If you have additional devices, one dynamic IP address per device must be requested from Shaw.  When using a router, devices on your network may share one IP address from Shaw. See Router Connection with Shaw for more information.

Shaw High Speed Business Internet Service

Shaw High-Speed Business Internet service offeres static IP addresses to its business customers. If you are connecting an Xbox console with a static IP address, you must configure your Xbox console to use the IP address provided to you by Shaw.

Direct Connection with Shaw

For a direct connection, you will need a standard Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors.

Note   You must have a dynamic IP address for each device (such as an Xbox or PC) on your network. If adding an Xbox console to your network does not exceed the number of dynamic IPs you have, proceed to step 1. If adding an Xbox console to your network causes your number of devices to exceed the number of IP addresses, you must request an additional IP address from Shaw.

To directly connect your hardware:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, Shaw DSL modem, and, if you have one, your PC) before connecting any cables.

You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using the Ethernet cable.
  4. Turn on your modem.
  5. Turn on your Xbox console, with no disc in the disc tray.
  6. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, Network Settings, then Connect.

Your settings are now used to connect to Xbox Live. Progress is displayed on the Connect Status screen. If the last item is "Connected to Xbox Live,"  congratulations! You are connected to Xbox Live. To create your Xbox Live account, or for more information about managing your account, see Sign Up for Xbox Live.

If you cannot connect to Xbox Live, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Shaw for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.

Router Connection with Shaw

Xbox Live: Shared Connection

To connect to Xbox Live with a router connection, you'll need three Ethernet cables with RJ-45 connectors and a cable/DSL router. To share with a PC, you'll also need an Ethernet NIC installed in the PC.

Note   If your router has been previously connected to Shaw High Speed Internet Service, proceed to step 1. If this is a new router installation to support your Xbox console, you must release the IP address from your PC so that an address can be obtained by your router.

To share your Shaw Internet connection with your PC using a router:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, DSL/cable router, Shaw DSL modem, and PC) before connecting any cables.

You must disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
  2. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  3. Connect the Ethernet out port on the modem to the Ethernet in port on the router using an Ethernet cable.
  4. Connect one of the Ethernet out ports on the router to the Ethernet in port on the PC NIC using an Ethernet cable.
  5. Connect another Ethernet out port on the router to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using an Ethernet cable.
  6. Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall jack out. This means, first turn on your modem, then your router, then your PC.
  7. Verify that the PC can access the Internet. If not, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with Shaw.
  8. Turn on your Xbox console with no disc in the disc tray.
  9. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, Network Settings, then Connect.

Note   With a router connection, you do not need to turn on your PC to access Xbox Live from your Xbox console.

Releasing your PC's IP address

If you are installing a new router to share your Internet connection between your Xbox console and a PC that has already been connected to Shaw High-Speed Internet service, you must release the IP address from your PC so that your router can obtain a new IP address.

  1. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  2. Type the following line in the Open box, and then click OK:

    cmd

  3. From the command prompt, use the IPCONFIG utility to release the IP address. To release the IP addresses for any adapter, enter the following line:

    ipconfig /release

To release an IP address for a specific adapter, enter the following line:

    ipconfig /release adapter

where adapter is the name of the specific adapter. To obtain specific adapter names (but not release any IP addresses) enter the following line:

    ipconfig

To release a specific IP address in Windows 98 SE or Windows 95:

  1. Click the Start button, then click Run.
  2. Type the following line in the Open box, and then click OK:

    winipcfg

  3. Click the Release button to release the IP address.

Configuring your Xbox console to use a specific IP address

To set up your Xbox console to an IP address provided by Shaw:

  1. Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
  2. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Settings, then Network Settings.
These steps assume you cannot connect to Xbox Live until you finish configuring your Xbox console to use a specific IP address.
  3. From the Network Settings screen, select IP Address.
  4. Enter an IP address provided by Shaw.
  5. To attempt connection to Xbox Live using the new IP address, return (Back) to the Network Settings screen, then select Connect.
