MN-740 Xbox Wireless Adapter

This wireless-to-Ethernet bridge is Xbox Live® compatible.

Important: A firmware update is available for the MN-740 Xbox Wireless Adapter. This firmware update should be applied only if your MN-740's firmware is lower than version 1.0.2.21.

About Firmware Update 1.0.2

This firmware update for the MN-740 does the following:

  • Adds support for connecting to networks with hidden SSIDs.
  • Resolves an issue with LED blink rates.

You should follow the instructions below to install this update if you require a connection to a wireless network with a hidden SSID, have experienced lag time during gameplay, and do not already have firmware version 1.0.2.21 on your adapter.

To check the adapter's firmware version on an original Xbox® video game system:

  1. On the Xbox console, go to the Settings screen.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. Select Wireless, More.
  5. Under Firmware Version, confirm the following numbers: 1.0.2.21 Boot: 1.3.0.05. If the firmware version has a lower number, then you need to install this update.

To check the adapter's firmware version on an Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system:

  1. On the Xbox 360 console, go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Advanced.
  4. Select Edit Settings, Additional Settings.
  5. Select the lower tier, Advanced Settings, then Wireless Information. Beside the word "version," look for the phrase 1.0.2.21 Boot: 1.3.0.05. If the version is a lower number, then you need to install this update.

Early versions of the MN-740 firmware require that the wireless network SSID be broadcast. Turning off SSID broadcast would result in dropped connections to the MN-740. However, the latest versions of MN-740 firmware (1.0.2.21 and later) maintain a connection with or without SSID broadcast.

Note: The MN-740 does not support the 802.11b+ (22 Mbps) standard. The MN-740 also does not support DLink 802.11g Xtreme G (108 Mbps). Please see your router manufacturer's instructions to ensure that transmission ranges remain in the 802.11b (11 Mbps) or 802.11g (54 Mbps) range.

For example, to specify appropriate ranges with DLink DI-614+ settings, select Basic Rates: 1–2–5.5–11 (Mbps) and TX Rates: 1–2–5.5–11 (Mbps).

  7. At the end of the wizard, click Finish, and then turn on your Xbox or Xbox 360 console.

If you do not have a wireless router, access point, or gateway, use a computer to perform the update. This computer must be running Windows 98 or later with Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later.

To install the update if you do not have a wireless router, access point, or gateway:

  1. Disconnect the wireless adapter from your Xbox or Xbox 360 console.
  2. Reset the adapter by unplugging the power cord and then plugging it in again.

  7. At the end of the wizard, click Finish.
  8. Disconnect the adapter from your computer and then reconnect it to your Xbox or Xbox 360 console.

To make sure that the firmware update installed correctly, check Wireless settings (original Xbox) or Advanced Settings (Xbox 360) as described in About Firmware Update 1.0.2. If the firmware version has a lower number, check the connection to the adapter and install the firmware update again.

Allow MAC Addresses for Wireless Access Points or Gateways

If you use MAC restrictions on your wireless gateway or access point, the MN-740 will not be able to connect until you add the MAC addresses of both the MN-740 and your Xbox console to your access point or gateway's list of allowed MAC addresses.

To find the MAC addresses of the MN-740 and the Xbox console:

  1. Check that your wireless gateway or access point is acting as a DHCP server and that MAC address filtering is off. If you're not sure how to do this, consult the documentation for your gateway or access point.
  2. Connect to Xbox Live with your MN-740.
  3. From the Xbox Dashboard, select Main Menu, Settings, and then Network Settings.
  4. From the Network Settings screen, write down the MAC address of your console. This is the number appearing in the lower right-hand corner of your screen (MAC=[your number]).
  5. From the Network Settings screen, select IP Addresses and write down the IP address of your MN-740.
  6. Follow your wireless access point or gateway manufacturer's instructions to show the DHCP client listing for that device. Write down the MAC address associated with the IP address you recorded in the previous step. This is the MAC address of your MN-740.
  7. Follow your wireless access point or gateway manufacturer's instructions to enter both your Xbox console's MAC address (from Step 4) and your MN-740 MAC address (from Step 7) as allowed MAC addresses.

You should now be able to turn on MAC address filtering and the MN-740 will remain connected to your wireless access point or gateway.
