Ubi Soft’s latest Tom Clancy masterpiece has a familiar name: Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® 3. You might remember a top-selling PC game of that title that came out sometime last year. Long in development, the Xbox version has been rebuilt from the ground up and promises all-new first-person tactical shooter action. All three of Ubi Soft’s previous Clancy titles have made excellent use of Xbox’s online capabilities, and Xbox Live has been fully integrated into Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3. Now, Xbox gamers all over the world can defend truth, justice, and the American way in a game that’s easily one of the best first-person squad-based shooters on any system … since, well, Ubi Soft’s last Tom Clancy game.
No Man Is an Army Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3 opens in the near future (naturally) and will immediately bring to mind the plots of Ubi Soft’s other Tom Clancy releases. OPEC has the United States by the short ones when they launch an oil embargo against the land of the free. But, plucky Venezuela, never an oil-producing country to miss a golden opportunity, breaks the embargo and starts shipping black gold northand it ain’t going to Canada. This ticks off some terrorists that are counting on the embargo to influence American power in the Middle East, so they start sticking it to Venezuelans, both in Venezuela and out. When they strike on Swiss soil, the terrorists go too far. (Fun fact: Did you know that Swiss law requires all adults to have gun training?) The United Nations calls in Team Rainbow to put a stop to the threats. As team leader Domingo “Ding” Chavez, you’ll lead a team of three other highly trained commandos on 14 tense and beautifully designed story missions in five countries, taking on the bad guys wherever they may lurk.
Now, is that something you really want to take on alone? Of course not.
Ding Me Co-op play for first-person shooters has been a part of Xbox since the beginning (you have played co-opHalo, right?), and the designers of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3 have made sure that the story mode lets not two … not three … but fourplayers tackled the story missions as Team Rainbow. Even though your squad A.I. is top-notch, and the controller commands are diverse and easy to use, there’s nothing like playing a game like this with an actual four-person team. You and your friends can even trade off roles to add to the variety and an extra level of competition to the cooperation. Who’s the most effective commander? Who’s handiest with grenades? Which team member is the frostiest sniper?
Choose Your Own Squad-Based Tactical Adventure A team of Xbox Live gamers can also increase the efficiency of your tactics tenfold, and the more you play, the better your team will get. Try planning your mission strategies through voice chat ahead of time. Then, when the fur hits the fan, you’ll be ready to execute. There will be fatalities, but that’s just a part of Clancy’s uber-realistic universe. Remember: Guns don’t kill counter-terrorism specialists, bullets do. Don’t worry about saving health power-ups for your teammates either. There aren’t any.
Along with the 14 story missions available for Xbox Liveand System Link match-ups, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3gives armchair Jack Ryans the chance to plot their own deadly missions and take them online. Co-op play on Xbox Live is a natural fit for the service and squad-based games like Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 3, and it’s a great example of things to come.
