You're playing the hottest new shooter, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3. Your buddies are counting on you to stay alive and not drag them down. What can you do to improve your chances of staying alive? I'm here to help.
Communications in the Field The XboxLive Communicator headset offers you the best method of coordinating movement and weapon fire with the rest of your team. In the Mission, Terrorist Hunt, and Team Survival modes, the headset will allow you to speak with only the other members of your team, at any distance. The enemy cannot hear your broadcasts to each other. In the Survival and Sharpshooter modes, any other individual standing within 15 meters of your position can hear your shouts. Since both Survival and Sharpshooter are adversarial games, not team games, coordinating is not really an issue anyway.
Movement Movement across open areas is an invitation to snipers. Avoid open spaces whenever possible. If you do have to cross a clear area during open combat, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of making it across unscathed. First, have a plan. From your initial position, look across to where you're going, and select your final destination. Choose the shortest route, making sure you've moved as far as possible behind cover before striking out into the open.
If you know the position of the enemy, cover each other's movement by having the rest of the team direct suppressive fire at the enemy's position while each individual moves. Look for opportunities to take cover along the way, perhaps by crouching behind a low wall or other sight-blocking objects. Use smoke grenades to obscure your movement from the enemy and deny him a clear shot at you, but be prepared for the enemy to use suppressive fire when he sees smoke. And, don't forget that the enemy's sights may allow him to see through your covering haze.
When you reach the new position, get under cover quickly, and be prepared to use suppressive fire to cover the movement of your teammates as they follow.
If you’re inside a building, stay close to the walls of structures to help hide yourself. Use shadows where possible to lower your visibility to the enemy.
Approaching a corner, turn to face the wall before leaning out to look around the corner. Otherwise, you may project the barrel of your weapon around the corner in advance of yourself, alerting the enemy to your presence (known as "flagging your weapon"). InRainbow Six 3, the D-pad can be used to lean to the left or right, to look around a corner with minimal exposure. For optimum cover, get in a crouched position before checking around a corner.
Entry In Rainbow Six 3, you don't have the option of using charges to make holes in the walls of buildings, but you can still use good tactics when entering through doors. If you're not under fire, treat open doorways like corners, minimizing your visibility as you check to see what's inside. Lean sideways around the doorjamb while crouched. If you know the enemy occupies a room, a grenade makes a nice warm-up act to precede your entry. Make sure to have proper cover from your own frag grenade, look away from flash bangs, and wear a gas mask when entering a room you’ve filled with debilitating smoke.
Fundamentals of Precision Room Clearing
Move silently when approaching a room to be cleared.
Position yourselves in proper order of entrance, and be ready to move on a single command.
Enter with all possible speed. The first moments of surprise are your best chance to eliminate the enemy without risk to yourself.
Immediately take up positions that allow unobstructed fire.
Use accurate and discriminating fire to eliminate the enemy.
After the room is cleared, remain alert for further enemy contact. Do not neglect rear security.
