Walkthrough 4: Interference

After fighting through the streets of the first urban engagement, you meet with Chung for the first time. He has been simultaneously directing your squad and fending off attacks on the building he’s defending. He’s impatient to continue the mission and directly attack the Republic rail cannons in their lair, but the way is too well-defended and barricaded. Specialist Pitney has determined that this building has a backdoor route into the enemy base and is in the process of clearing that route, so that you can continue. Buy Piney the time he needs to find the route.

Primary Level Goals:

  • Find Chung.
  • Stop the attackers.
  • Open the access hatch.
  • Disable the jamming computer.
  • Disable the second computer.

Secondary Level Goal:

  • Eliminate the rooftop sniper.

The Republic has been attacking hard, and Chung’s squad has been reduced to a skeletal defense. A new offensive is seen approaching down the street, and a friendly machine gunner locks and loads in preparation of fending off the attackers one more time. Cut to you and your newly rescued squad entering the scene.

Chung instructs you to meet him inside for a briefing. Through the door, you see Chung for the first time. He informs you that Pitney is working on the hatch, and you need to help buy him time by holding of the enemies. Just then, a new attack comes from the south, and Chung commands the squad to hold them off.

Before you go in to meet Chung, you can explore the small restaurant behind you to find a health upgrade on the second floor. The first attack from the south jump into the street, but you can take care of them with a well-placed grenade.

Beware of sneaky enemies that shoot in from the side windows, though. Grenades can be carefully thrown through windows to clear enemies behind the cover in the street.

After the first wave of enemies is eliminated, Chung informs you that Pitney needs help at the hatch. (On the second floor to the south is a save room stocked with pick-ups.) On the way to the hatch, you'll run into Chung again, which triggers the cinematic of Chung activating your shield augmentation. Continuing on, you'll encounter enemies that have managed to get inside of the building and are attacking from up a stairwell.

After killing the aggressive enemies coming up the stairs, you can get a shot on the surviving guard by shooting him from behind, from on top of the stairwell.

At the base of the stairs, a cinematic starts of a hidden Republic soldier throwing an EMP grenade and Snowblinding you. This is the first time that you experience the Snowblind effect. As you continue into the control room, Pitney and Chung have a conversation about you being Snowblinded. Behind Pitney is a computer panel that should open the hatch leading into the Republic base. Once you use it, a cinematic of the hatch opening and being closed by enemy hackers is played, and you're given the next mission of killing the hackers and disabling the hacking computer.

Upon leaving the control room, you'll come under attack from the facing building by the support troops of the first hacker. A fierce close battle through the windows will ensue. Though the window is tight, grenades and carbine alt fires can do significant damage in the enclosed space that the Republic is attacking from. Throwing grenades up from the first side alley can quickly eliminate the second floor support troops. This can also remove the danger of the enemy machinegunner facing the approach to the building.

Head up the flight of stairs and into the direct fire of a close machinegun emplacement. Once you near the emplacement, enemy support troops retreat to hold the bottom floor with the computer panel. Over the ComSet, Chung reminds you that you now have a shield augmentation, and you should use it. Past the top floor, you run into the now entrenched support troops guarding the computer on the first floor.

A fun tactic going down the stairs is to turn on the Reflex Boost and rush the enemy. It’s possible to take them all out by rushing in slow time and punching them to death.

Past the troops lies the computer at the northwest wall near the refrigerated displays. Upon using it, you're informed by Pitney that there is another computer that has been compromised. The signal from it must be cleared. Progress back up the stairs and confront another attacker jumping down the ruined stairs directly in front of you. With this wave is an enemy sniper that quickly runs out of range and takes up position to fire into the street. When the sniper dies, he drops the first player-useable Sniper Rifle.

At this point (unless it’s been destroyed), you'll has access to the machinegun emplacement. It's very effective against the stair jumpers. Piney now comes over the ComSet and informs you that there is another enemy sniper causing excessive casualties that you need to take out. There is a pistol enemy directly in front of the sniper hole that is good practice for using the Sniper Rifle.

The enemy sniper can be found by crouching at the sniper hole, zooming in, and looking south to southeast. Kill him to complete the secondary objective.

As you reenters the front room of the main building, a devastating mortar attack begins. Pitney warns over the ComSet to stay away from the windows. Then, two walls of the building are blow out, creating a breach point that the enemies can attack to get inside the main building. A helicopter drops off enemy shock troops that directly assault the inside of the building, while the rest provide cover fire from the street.

At the start of the shelling, run quickly to the save point and save your progress. Beware of falling mortars blowing out the walls near you on the way. Use everything at your disposal here: augmentations, grenades, and the shotgun. If the enemy gets into the building, it becomes a tough, nearly hand-to-hand fight.

Once the attack has been thinned out, the friendly troops will advance into the street. This is a good signal to continue across the main street and into the building facing it. Watch for ambush attackers coming over the barricades. Continue up the stairs and into the second hacking computer building. Watch for the guard on the stairs. Before using the computer, stock-up in this room. There are many helpful pickups.

After disabling the second jamming computer, Piney comes back over the ComSet and tells you that the hatch has been cleared, and it’s time to leave. While he’s talking, the Republic attacks even more fiercely with a devastating mortar barrage that threatens the entire operation. He quickly commands the troops to run for cover and tells Nathan to stay put until the barrage is ended. The friendly troops run for cover as mortars tear the rest of the building's front to pieces, exposing the position completely. Before the barrage is over, you'll see a cinematic of the first Military 'Bot stalking over the south barricade and attacking the troops. Pitney now informs you that the Republic is sending a massive assault and that you must provide heavy cover fire as support. You have an open view of the attackers assaulting the building, so using the nearby machinegun emplacement is your best method of both attack and defense.

Immediately swivel the emplacement to the left and down. With constant directed fire, the Military 'Bot will be destroyed relatively quickly. But, if it get off a shot of it’s explosive attack, run way, as it can do significant damage.

Once the first Military 'Bot is dead, two others will attack from both sides of the street. If you're fast and accurate with the emplacement, trade off from shooting at the attacking troops and quickly kill both Military 'Bots.

After a certain amount of enemies are dead, Piney comes back on the ComSet and prompts you to exit with him. After fighting back through the remaining Republic troops, jump down into the hatch with Piney and Chung and runs to the end of the tunnel, ending the level.

On the way back through the building, the Republic troops make a fierce attack aimed at killing the friendly machinegunner from the beginning of the level. You can leap across and engage the enemy to save the machinegunner, if you'd like.
