Walkthrough 8: Riot
After escaping an occupied Coalition base, overrun by Republic troops, Nathan Frost must now fight his way through the exterior courtyards, with the full force of the Republic army gunning for him. Specialist Pitney and a small group of Coalition soldiers are waiting for him on the north side of the base, but they’ll need his help to bust through the Republic resistance and evacuate.
Primary Level Goals:
- Rendezvous with the remaining coalition troops
- Follow Pitney to radio for air transport
- Secure the landing zone
Secondary Level Goals:
As Frost drops down to an access tunnel under the base exterior, the Republic finish up their mortar strike on the base. With the shelling complete, the Republic begins to drop off more troops in case Frost has escaped. As the mission begins, Pitney contacts Frost to give him the Coalition’s positon.
- Objective Revealed: Rendezvous with the remaining coalition troops
Frost begins in an access tunnel behind the main gate of the base. Though the Republic troops are waiting for him, they’re expecting him to come out through the main gate. There are Republic troops in every area of the courtyard ahead, including one on a .50 Caliber emplacement.
You have the element of surprise for once, so be sure to take the time to formulate a plan before you rush out. Both Reflex Boost and Shield will help you immensely here (and throughout this mission). Use Enhanced Vision near the top of the passage, if you want a better idea of the troop arrangement.
Once the troops have spotted Frost, he’ll need to deal with them as quickly as possible. There are dozens in the base and if they converge on him, he’s done for. Using crowd control weapons like the HERF Gun or the Shotgun, coupled with stunning grenades, like Flashbangs or Gas Grenades can help even the odds.
Midway through the battle in the first courtyard, additional reinforcements will head in from the east. This squad includes a soldier armed with a Rocket Launcher, so Frost will need to neutralize him first.
The path to the next area diverges. The path on the right is more direct, but offers few rewards and puts Frost in a disadvantageous position for the next battle. There are more opportunities and resources on the left hand path (through the gate), so let’s assume Frost heads that way.
A Combat Bot is patrolling just beyond the gate. Frost can take it out with EMP grenades, but if he can spare an Icepick, he can use it to mop up the remaining Republic forces in the area.
Although you’re heavily outnumbered (and alone) in this mission, many of the groups of Republic soldiers are grouped in tight formation. Use this to your advantage by taking out large numbers of them with explosive weapons, such as Frag Grenades or the Rocket Launcher.
There’s a Save Point to the left of where the Combat Bot was patrolling. Frost can save his progress here and refill on health and BioEnergy.
At this point, Pitney contacts Frost to tell him that there should still be a Walker somewhere in base. Getting control of the Walker will be a huge help for fighting your way through the ranks of enemies.
This ONLY happens if you (or an enemy) didn’t get in the Walker on Frost’s original mission to infiltrate the base. If anyone used the Walker (or it was destroyed in that mission), it won’t be there this time around.
Assuming the Walker is there, it can be found in a sealed Walker Pen on the south side of the second large courtyard. There are two ways Frost can get to it. The best way is to find the vent that leads directly inside. The vent can be found to the east of the Combat Bot, near the large gate to next courtyard.
When Frost enters the eastern courtyard (by either entrance, or in the walker), enemies will begin to pour in over the gate on the East side. If he can take them out before they spread out, he’ll have an easier time. Frost will need to be careful during this battle, as additional troops will arrive from the west as the battle progresses.
If the Walker isn’t there, you can still make your way through this courtyard, but you’ll have a more challenging battle. As before, use crowd control weapons and Augmentations to keep from being overwhelmed.
If the Walker is in the pen and Frost doesn’t get in it, the Republic troops will try to take control of this. Taking out the enemy going for it after they open the pen door, but before they get in the Walker is an alternate way to get the Walker for Frost himself.
If Frost is in the Walker, the Republic will deploy additional Rocket Launcher armed troops to this area. These are capable of taking out the Walker in short order, so these should be his first targets.
Once the courtyard is clear, Frost will need to head north. Again, the paths diverge. The right path has more enemies, but puts Frost in a well-defended position for the next battle. The left path is safer, but he’ll have a tougher battle in the next area. The path to the right also offers a ladder, which will let Frost get up on the roof – from here he as a chance to get the drop on the Republic.
Assuming Frost heads north along the right-hand path, he’ll face heavy opposition from Republic soldiers with ample cover. When the path curves to the left, Frost will need to prepare. There is a huge number of Republic soldiers (and another .50 caliber) on the other side of the wall. There is also a Rocket Launcher soldier on the far side of the courtyard, so Frost will need to be careful not to take one on the chin.
Charging headlong into this battle is almost certain death. Now would be a good time to throw out a few SpiderBots to split the enemies attention, or drop down a Riotwall to block the door.
Once the courtyard is clear, Pitney will contact Frost and head up to the surface to meet him.
When Pitney surfaces through the door on the far side of the third courtyard, two Combat Bots will also emerge from the door on the left. Frost will need to neutralize them (with a little help from Pitney) before they can retreat.
- Objective Completed: Rendezvous with the remaining coalition troops
Once the Bots are scrapped, even more Republic soldiers will pour into the courtyard. It’s time to fall back and regroup with the men below. Frost must follow Pitney below and radio for an evacuation.
- Objective Revealed: Follow Pitney to radio for air transport
Frost must follow Pitney down below. Pitney will lock the door behind you and run to the radio in the back of the basement.
The Liberty Coalition troops will greet Frost and you can talk to each of them a few more times to learn details of the Republic surprise attack on the temple base. When you’re ready, join Pitney back by the radio to call in the evacuation.
Frost continues the fight south. Once again, the Republic are set up in defensive positions, so he’ll need to use every advantage to gain ground.
- Objective Completed: Follow Pitney to radio for air transport
Once Pitney has sent in the call for an evacuation, he’ll open the supply room for Frost. This is your chance to stock up on ammo and, more importantly, get the Flechette Gun. The Flechette Gun has a higher rate of fire and does more damage than the Carbine, so it should be your fallback weapon from here on out.
The Alt Fire launches a swarm of intelligent Attack Drones, which are capable of seeking out enemies on their own. The Drone’s are great for causing a panic in a large crowd and diverting enemy attention. Their attack does EMP damage, as well, so they can even go toe to toe against bots and augmented foes. They’ll come in handy in the battles ahead.
Once Frost has stocked up and saved the game, he’ll need to head back out to the basement. As he does, the Republic will bust through the locked doors and start to flood the basement.
- Objective Revealed: Secure the landing zone.
Frost will need to run to the entrance and clear a path through the advancing troops and back up to the courtyard. The remaining Coalition force will follow him back up, to be greeted by swarms of Republic troops. Frost, aided by Pitney and the remaining Coalition troops, will need to lock down the courtyard before the chopper can land to airlift them out.
The enemies will come in four waves. Initial group (including a Combat Bot) will be there when you come up the surface. The next wave comes from the left side. The third wave comes from the right side and the last wave comes from both sides.
This can be an extremely tough battle, depending on how long you can keep the Liberty Coalition soldiers alive. As long as at least one of them is manning the .50 caliber gun, you should be able to take out the incoming Republic troops pretty quickly. Heavy firepower is the key to avoiding being overwhelmed here, so don’t be afraid to throw everything you’ve got at it. The new Attack Drone Alt Fire on the Flechette Gun is extremely helpful here, as it essentially adds an additional friend to the battle. Throw out two of these and then use the primary fire to take them out as they pour over the walls.
Once the courtyard has been cleared, the chopper will approach for a landing. Frost should stand underneath it to begin the evacuation.
- Objective Completed: Secure the landing zone
As Frost, Pitney and the other survivors escape, they discuss their plans for the fractured Liberty Coalition. Frost decides to regroup with the rest of the men at Lion Hill. As their chopper is taking off from the base, however, a mysterious cloaked figure emerges from the crowd of Republic soldiers.
