How to Troubleshoot File Transfers

from a PC to an Xbox Using Music Mixer

Troubleshooting Using a Direct Connection
To troubleshoot using a direct connection from a PC to an Xbox with a crossover (System Link) cable, use the following methods.

First, make sure the following conditions are true:

  • You are using a crossover or system link cable. Straight Ethernet cable will not work.
  • Your Xbox Live Settings are configured toAutomatic.
  • Your network card is functioning correctly.

If all these conditions are true, and you still receive the error message, “Unable to complete import. The connection to your PC was lost,” follow these steps:

1. Make sure that the PC and Xbox are on the same subnet by checking IP addresses for both the PC and the Xbox. If the first three sets of three numbers match, you are on same subnet.

For example, 123.142.155.112 and123.142.155.209 are on the same subnet.

To verify whether the PC and Xbox are on the same subnet:

a. To display the Xbox IP address, press the Ybutton on the Music Mixer Import screen.

b. To display the PC IP address:

1. Click Start, and then clickRun.

2. In the Open box, type cmdto start the command prompt.

3. Type ipconfig, and then pressEnter.

4. The IP address is displayed underConnection. Write it down.

c. Compare the IP address for the PC to the IP address for the Xbox. Do the first three sets of three numbers match?

2. If the subnets are different, make sure that your computer is configured to obtain an IP address automatically. To do this:

a. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

b. Double-click Network Connections.

c. Right-click the connection that you are using for your network, and then click Properties.

d. On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then clickProperties.

e. On the General tab, make sure that theObtain an IP address automatically option is selected.

f. On the Alternate Configuration tab, make sure that the Automatic private IP address option is selected.

g. Restart both the Xbox and the PC.

h. Try to transfer files from the PC to the Xbox.

3. If you still cannot transfer files from the PC to the Xbox, set the clock on your Xbox ahead two days.

For example, change today’s clock date from 10/28/03 to 10/30/03. When you set the clock date ahead two days, your DHCP lease expires, and that causes the automatic IP address to function correctly.

This step is only useful if your PC also has an autoIP acquired IP number (169.254.x.x).

4. Make sure that only the connection to the Xbox is enabled. If you have multiple network interface cards or connections enabled, the PC Tool may be selecting the wrong one. To find out if only the connection to the Xbox is enabled, check the Network Connections screen. To do this:

a. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

b. Double-click Network Connections.

c. Right-click the connection that you want to disable, and then click Disable.

Troubleshooting Using a Home Network
To troubleshoot usinga home networkfrom a PC to an Xbox with a crossover (System Link) cable, use the following methods.

  • First, make sure the following conditions are true:
  • Your Xbox Live Settings are configured toAutomatic.
  • Your network card is functioning correctly.
  • You have the latest firmware version for your router.

If all these conditions are true, and you still receive the error message, “Unable to complete import. The connection to your PC was lost,” follow these steps:

1. If the Internet connection firewall is enabled, you must open the TCP 3074 and UDP 3074ports.

For more information about how to do this, see the instructions at the bottom of the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ports.asp

You do not have to disable a firewall to use the PC Tool. Opening the appropriate ports can resolve this issue. Other firewall software prompts you to grant the PC Tool access when you run it.

2. Make sure that the PC and Xbox are on the same subnet by checking IP addresses for both the PC and the Xbox. If the first three sets of three numbers match, you are on same subnet.

For example, 123.142.155.112 and123.142.155.209 are on the same subnet.

c. Right-click the connection that you are using for your network, and then click Properties.

d. On the General tab, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then clickProperties.

e. On the General tab, make sure that the Obtain an IP address automatically option is selected.

f. On the Alternate Configuration tab, make sure that the Automatic private IP address option is selected.

g. Restart both the Xbox and the PC.

h. Try to transfer files from the PC to the Xbox.

4. If you still cannot transfer files from the PC to the Xbox, set the clock on your Xbox ahead two days.
