Mortal Kombat®: Deception™

Secrets from the Krypt

Mortal Kombat®: Deadly Alliance™ introduced an easter egg lover's paradise with the addition of the Krypt—and they've brought it back in this year's Mortal Kombat®: Deception™!

The Krypt takes the form of a large cemetery. Rows upon rows of gravestones are available. It's this cemetery, or "Krypt," that houses 400 different unlockable items—400! There are a couple of things note about the Krypt before we hand out a few bits of free advice, though.

His alternate costume rocks.

First, most gravestones are marked with a Koin value (e.g. Koffin SR costs 2252 Gold Koins) that you'll need to spend in order to unearth whatever lies beneath. Koins are the currency for theMortal Kombat realms (yes, there is more than one realm), and you'll earn them by playing the Konquest and Arcade modes. That said, you will earn vastly more by playing Konquest than you will by playing Arcade mode, so if you're looking to make a quick buck or two, Konquest is your best bet.

Not only are there Koins just laying about all around the realms (make sure you visit every house in every realm), but you can earn more by accepting and completing side quests as well as fighting other combatants that you cross paths with.

Secondly, any Koffin that does not sport a Koin value must be unlocked with a Krypt key. Each Krypt key you find will only open one specific Koffin. So, if you want to open Koffin AM, you won't just have to find a Krypt key; you'll have to find the Krypt key for Koffin AM. All of these keys are found throughout the Konquest mode by completing side quests or stumbling across treasure chests.

Moreover, some treasure chests only appear at certain times (and some only at certain times on certain days), so if you run across a secret location that seems like it should be holding a chest, try meditating to make the hours speed by. Eventually, you might see a chest pop out of nowhere.

Look, all the characters are unlocked.

Photo Koffins
Now, let us get down to some of thing you'll want to immediately unlock in the Krypt and the few that you can wait on. No offense to the hard working folks at Midway who slaved away to make this game, but I don't want to be spending my hard-earned Koins (at first anyway) to unlock photos of them sitting at their desks. These are cool behind-the-scenes easter eggs to be sure, but they're best saved for last.

Here's a quick list of all the Koffins that hold photos. You may want to hold off on these Koffins until you've unlocked a lot of the in game features (e.g. new arenas, new characters, and new costumes):

CP, CT, DG, FB, EQ, FH, FM, GJ, GR, HA, HD, HS, IF, IT, JA, JB, IN, KD, KP, LB, LM, LP, MQ, MT, NC, NK, NS, OL, OR, PG, PK, PO, QA, QQ, RC, RN, RR, SB, SO, SS, TA, TG, TO, TS.

That may seem like a whole heck of a lot, but remember, there are 400 Koffins in the Krypt.

Arenas
Not only are the arenas in Mortal Kombat: Deception cool to look at, but they're interactive, too. So unlocking a new fighting arena isn't just about just cool scenery, but it offers the opportunity for different level-specific strategies as well. Mastering an arena is almost as fun as perfecting a combatant. Here's are the two arenas you can unlock, just with Koins.

  • Koffin DS: Costs 1694 sapphire Koins. This will unlock the creepy Living Forest. (Just look at the faces staring out at you from the tree trunks!)
  • Koffin JI: Costs 2191 ruby Koins. This will unlock the Deadpool, a circular arena surrounding by bubbling acid. Don't get knocked in …

This arena rocks.

Costumes
Alternative costumes have been all the rage since the Street Fighter franchise was born, and Mortal Kombat: Deception is no exception. Here's a list of alternative costumes that you can purchase using Koins.

  • Koffin SR: Costs 2252 gold Koins. Unlocks Baraka's new costume.
  • Koffin IB: Costs 2086 onyx Koins. Unlocks Bo Rai Cho's new costume.
  • Koffin CN: Costs 1114 onyx Koins. Unlocks Havik's new costume.
  • Koffin QT: Costs 1064 ruby Koins. Unlocks Hotaru's new costume.
  • Koffin SG: Costs 990 sapphire Koins. Unlocks Kira's new costume.
  • Koffin EG: Costs 1494 platinum Koins. Unlocks Noob-Smoke's new costume.

Combatants
Every unlockable fighter in Mortal Kombat: Deception is unlocked via Krypt keys—all except two, that is. They are:

  • Jade: Found in Koffin OI. Costs 2417 onyx Koins.
  • Noob-Smoke: Found in Koffin DM. Costs 3642 onyx Koins.

I'd tell you what they're like, but it's just so much more fun to experiment with them for yourself. One tip though: Noob-Smoke's fatalities depend on which character (Noob or Smoke) is onscreen.

Beyond the costumes, arenas, characters, and photos, there are all sorts of other types of items. You'll unlock cool production art, alternative bios for the characters, little movie snippets, and all manner of other behind-the-scenes items.

The Krypt is one of the coolest additions to the Mortal Kombat series, so get out there and start finding those Koins and Krypt keys!
