Lost Planet: A Different Angle Online

At A Glance
  • We discuss Lost Planet's unique take on multiplayer games on Xbox Live.

Lost Planet™: Extreme Condition is primarily known for its unique single-player campaign. It is a third-person shooter heavy on the action and equally balanced with innovation in its energy management system, platform challenges, and Vital Suits.

While the single-player experience is worthy of all the acclaim it has earned, the online component is just as creative, and more importantly, just as fun.

Equal Mechanics
Many games offer one set of mechanics for their offline game, but switch things up, or worse, dumb things down, for multiplayer modes. Fortunately, this is not the case with Lost Planet, which retains its core identity beautifully online. Energy management is still an issue as your supply will continue to dwindle in combat. You still have your anchor, which allows you to grapple onto surfaces. All the Vital Suits and weapon upgrades are also available in online combat.

Game Modes
No shooter is complete without a full compliment of deathmatch modes online, and Lost Planet certainly boasts a full compliment. However, Lost Planet also has two original online game types specific to it.

  • Post Grab: The goal is simple, but the execution is intense. Your team must activate and control each data post on the map to win the match. The data posts are tactically placed and the action is focused, so you won't waste any time looking for opponents.
  • Fugitive: While Post Grab offers team-oriented gamers their strategic fix, Fugitive gives players a very special new game-type. The host plays the hunted fugitive, and every other player attempts to hunt him down. The fugitive must keep constantly moving, and also make kills to fill your Battle Gauge. Fill the gauge and you win, but any damage you take reduces the gauge, and when it's empty, you're toast.

Auto Retry
Fans of the online demo for Lost Planet will be happy to know that a Retry option has been implemented at the end of every Player Match. This allows you to immediately decide you want a rematch and jump right back into the game instead of returning to the lobby to find another match.

Achieving Online
Not one to favor the single-player campaign over the multiplayer, Capcom has instituted several online achievements for those craving additional gamerscore. Here are a few you can look forward to:

  • Medals: Win a medal for each match-type in Lost Planet. Collect all ten medals and you earn a 30 point achievement.
  • Online Master: Put in your Lost Planet hours online to net a 50 point achievement after reaching level 50.
  • Chain Killer: Build a chain kill by successfully building a string of kills. If you can manage ten kills in a row, you'll earn a t0 point achievement.
  • Head Hunter: Headshots are always rewarding, and in Lost Planet, 50 headshots will earn you 50 achievement points.
  • Online Century: Another achievement for the dedicated Lost Planet gamer, log 100 online matches, and you will earn another 50 gamerscore.

Lost Planet has paved its own way, and the multiplayer mode is no different. Whether you want a change of pace from the standard online shooter, or you want some unique and intense action, Lost Planet delivers on Xbox Live®.
