First Area Walkthrough

  • Get through the first two major checkpoints in the game.

After landing on the shore of Skull Island, it's time to take your first steps into the grand adventure that is Peter Jackson's King Kong The Official Game of the Movie. This walkthrough will get you past the first two major checkpoints in the game.

After getting knocked out and waking up to the wonderful Ann Darrow leaning over you, it's time to get moving. Follow Carl, Ann, and the rest up through the stairs and into the cavern, and press A to select Hayes, and tap A again to grab your first weapon, a pistol.

You won't see this strapping young beast until later in the game.

Directly ahead you'll need to shoot a grouping of crab-like creatures. Don't worry about aiming too much, just point in the direction and shoot. King Kong offers a very cinematic experience, and unless you're really off target, your shot should connect. After the first set of creatures, you'll find one more lurking near the cavern's exit. One shot should take it down. Afterward, hit the gate blocking your path (use the right trigger) to knock it down and proceed outside.

Head down the path to the right till you get to a wooden spiked gate. Hayes will say he needs your help to open it. When he does, walk over to the wooden handle sticking out from the pole in front of the door, and hold the right trigger to grab hold of it. When Hayes is ready, press forward to push the handle around. Keep holding forward on the left analog stick till Carl and Ann finish their conversation. You'll know you're done when the game stops turning for you.

Next, turn around and start picking off the crabs advancing on you from the shore. Once the first few crabs are taken out, a monster version will appear. You'll need to fend it off while they attempt to finish getting the gate open. Make sure you aim low, near the mouth in order for your bullets to properly connect and drive it back.

The bone piles that supply spears are unlimited, so keep grabbing from there, even when it looks like there's no more.

Once you've taken the giant crab out, wait for Carl and Hayes to get the gate lifted and head on through with the group. Once you collect the shotgun (in the hanging box just after you spot the sea plane along the path), you'll encounter several more crab creatures. When they're in a group, wait from to get clustered together and fire in the middle of them with the shotgun. This should take out a few at a time and help conserve ammunition.

When you get to the next closed gate, grab the scrap of wood lying on the ground, and slot it into the left wooden post. You can then grab hold and push the post around to open it.

Next, after you've and followed the path up to the open tomb, you'll see a lit torch. Grab a spear (on the ground nearby), and light the spear on fire by pressing it into the flame (right trigger). You can then jab the lit spear into the brush in front of the gate and light it on fire. This will clear a path for you.

In the next room you'll be forced to fight several giant caterpillars. You should still have the shotgun, but try to ration your ammo by using the spears in the room. Two solid spear chucks should take out a caterpillar. Remember also that you can grab and reuse a spear after you throw it. Also, the bone piles that supply spears are unlimited, so keep grabbing from there, even when it looks like there's no more.

Something dangerous lurks behind that crumbling façade.

There is a brief interlude after the first round of caterpillars, but get ready, more are coming. Once they're dealt with, follow the group through the opening in the cave. Once you're back out in the open, get ready for another couple caterpillars and a giant bat. Try to use a spear when you can to conserve ammo, but once they're taken care of, walk across the fallen log to the other side.

The log will break once you get across, but wait for Ann to scale the wall. Make sure you watch her, as she'll be attacked by several caterpillars. Once she's safely up on the ledge, turn around and follow the path across the log-bridges. They'll lead up to Ann.

Grab a spear from the nearby bone pile and head to the edge of the steps leading downward. Wait there a moment for the giant bat to glide towards you. When it's near, toss a spear into him. One shot should do it. Next, run down to the bottom, grab another spear from the adjacent bone pile and start taking out the advancing caterpillars.

After that, make sure your hand is once again equipped with a spear, and run toward the lit torch. Light the spear on fire and burn the brush in front of you. This should take out a few caterpillars hiding in the brush.

Once the fire has burned, Ann will climb up the wall to open the door for you. Watch out again, as a caterpillar will appear and attack her. Once she's on top of the ledge, turn around and wait for an upcoming bat to attack. Take it down, and then turn back around and head through the opened gate.

You'll be greeted by a swarm of spiders after the gate. To your right are a couple of larvae. Pierce one with a spear, and toss it into the corner, away form the spiders. When they chase after it, follow Ann through the opening.

Congratulations. You've made it through the first two major checkpoints in King Kong. By now you should have a good idea of the basic mechanics of the game, and what to look for. No doubt much more dangerous encounters lie ahead, but with the foundation this walkthrough provides, as well as our Tips and Tricks, you should have a solid structure to build from. Good luck.
