The Next Xbox

We asked gamers what they’d like to see in the next Xbox console. Most agreed that they want a hard drive (or other internal storage) and backward compatibility. Here are some of the other ideas:

“Standardized usage of Xbox Live. Every game should support dedicated servers that can be modified by its users via voting. If I’m not using my Xbox and broadband connection, I want to allow someone else to use it.”
—Mordeux

“More green in the design.”
—Chichlid

“Hopefully all games will have a feature likeLive Aware.”
—ArcticRecon

“How about a trackball in the controller? A thumb trackball, if designed correctly, may make it possible for Xbox to get the more popular RTS games [real-time shooters] to work on a console. Not only would Xbox be the first, but it would have something Sony wouldn’t … ”
—Christian McMahon

“Tivo-like functionality.”
—Danny Deck

“I would like the next Xbox to have the ability to call Xbox support through the Dashboard and a Web browser that will only take you to Xbox.com … I would like to see how the gamers rank in terms of positive and negative feedback in the Dashboard.”
—firstwitchking

“On/off/eject button on the controllers.”
—Pino Mazzone

“Color variants at launch (i.e. clear or colored casings and controllers) and an on/off switch on the DVD remote.”
—FATBOY

“Make it so you can use controllers and memory cards from the old Xbox, so you can transfer your Xbox Liveaccount.”
—bustabusta196

“The next Xbox should have a 5-CD changer built into it. So, in a click of a button, you can change from Halo 3on Live to Battlefront 2, and then when you’re invited to PGR4, you accept it, and it changes the CD toPGR4. Very fast and easy.”
—Canadan

“I would like to see an LCD panel on the front of the Xbox that would tell you what game you are playing, tell the time while it is off, show a logo if you are logged into XboxLive, show a logo when you get an invite, show the display information for DVDs while you play them, and show info in some applications like CD player, soundtrack, and even memory. It would show everything.”
—Bomberman447

“I expect to be able to put my picture in the games, so I am the lead character. [Also] much bigger online games than 16 people, great games from MS and Rare, and the ability to play against PC gamers.”
—Michael Cioffi

“I want repositioned shoulder buttons on the controller as well as making the grips on the controller just a tad bit longer.”
—KLRSKIR

“Jukebox feature like the current Xbox, but with more visualizations and the ability to connect to a PC to import .mp3 and .wma right out of the box. Wi-Fi built in. Wireless controllers. HDTV for all games with component video connections out of the box. Wireless AV connections, so you can have the console on the coffee table and be able to change games easier. Dolby Digital 5.1EX in all games with no exceptions.”
—Brian Chandra

“I’d like to see a radio feature on your next console. Instead of downloading songs from a CD, why not be able to listen to them on the radio? And why not have a radio station dedicated to video games [with] game music, updates, radio chat, etc.? It would be really nice to see this.”
—Mr Suko

“Just make sure the graphics own PS3 and the next GameCube. Yeah, that would be good.”
—David

“I would like to see modded parts. I’d like to be able to change out video cards and maybe even purchase a bigger hard drive and add that in there. I’d also like to see MS bust out some shells for the Xbox and not just that plain ol’ black box. Maybe even make them so you can take them apart and put LEDs in them.”
—Sp1tfir3

“A power/reset button on the controllers. I mean, come on, the gamer population is filled with lazy people (*cough* myself *cough*). I usually play late at night before hitting the sack, and it would be great not to have to move from my bed to turn off the console!”
—Brian O

“Voice commands, DVD without the kit, and a damn power button on that remote.”
—ZachAttack

“I just want it to beat the PS3.”
—Paynie

“Have an external disc changer—this would be an add-on. Have like a USB 2.0 port, or some custom high-speed port on the back of the console, and make a jukebox-like DVD changer that would match the console’s theme. This changer would simply plug right into the high-speed port on the back of the console. Once you put a game into the changer and have the console/disc changer read it, your console would remember what slot it was in and the name of the game. To change the disc, you would just go to your console’s Dashboard and click the “Change Game” button. This would bring up a list of all your games. Just click the one you want to start it up.”
—Trevor

“I would like to see a larger hard drive for downloadable demos. I would also like to see the ability to use your Xbox in more ways, such as a radio tuner, TV hookup with channels, and being able to talk back and forth to people on the PC from your Xbox.”
—swoosh bnd

“[Put] memory card slots in controllers, but make memory a USB format and make it an Xbox proprietary device (allow it to connect to the PC, but include a security file on the device, so only the Xbox brand USB devices work in controller). Also, I want Xbox Live mute and volume controls on the controller itself, the 2003 E3 Xbox Live headset, and a USB camera.”
—nojoke007

“Xbox Live linked to the first Xbox. I don’t know if there would be a new version, but if there is going to be backward compatibility, this is a must. I’ve always loved the fact that Xbox Live is an evolving community of people that has instant access to where your friends are and what they’re doing. I feel you guys did online the way it was supposed to be, under one single device.”
—Ac1d Re1gN

“A screaming processor and tons of RAM … same controller. All for under $350.00.”
—Fructose Juice

“The next Xbox should have all these features:

  • Bluetooth 2.0 wireless controllers that charge when you plug them in to make them wired.
  • DVD audio player.
  • MP3 audio player/music store.
  • Streaming video on all menus with a talking in-screen navigation menu. You could preview new game videos in the Dashboard, watch tournament videos, take a home video, and make it a background to the menus.
  • Ability to download movies off the web and watch them for 24 hours.
  • Wireless memory cards that transfer your game saves without inserting them into the system [and] transfer music.
  • Headphone port for MP3s.
  • Controllers that have a light in them that lights up depending on the amount of vibration plus allows you to page the controller from the system like a wireless phone. The light-up colors can change, so you can have two people with blue lights as one team and green lights for the other team.
  • On the front of the system, when you power it on, the letters of the name light up one by one.
  • The ability to create a custom startup sound, so when you load up, it can play a sound bite from your favorite movie or game.”
