Know Your Moves!

Each playable character has a unique repertoire of combination attacks. Open the Pause menu to view the character's abilities. Use the button combinations listed there to attack, evade, and explore with style.

Don't Get Comfortable

Enemies can hit a stationary player character more easily, whether he is on the ground or in mid-air. Avoid more attacks by moving continuously. Refrain from shooting while in mid-air when facing enemies that fire projectiles.

Escape with Side Rolls

Allow your right forefinger to hover over the lock-on button at all times, prepared to execute a side roll in a split second. When enemies suddenly leap in to attack from the sides, quickly press lock-on and jump while moving left or right to evade damage with a side roll.

Change Lock-on Frequently

Resist the temptation to lock-on to one foe and fixate on attacking them until they are destroyed. Even minor enemies can sustain a lot of damage and take many attacks to kill, leaving the character vulnerable to attack from other foes. By releasing and reinstating lock-on frequently, you can always defend against the closest threat.

Isolate Enemies

Use powerful melee attacks like Streak and Stinger to send enemies flying in all directions. Separation makes defeating individual enemies easier and safer. Nero's Devil Bringer enables him to snatch enemies out of crowds and bring them closer for a dose of death.

Take it to the Air

One of the best ways to dispatch foes with little chance of counterattack is to knock the enemy into the air. By pressing lock-on and melee attack while moving away from the enemy, the character will knock the enemy sky high. Continue holding melee attack at the end of the move to rise into the air with them. Once aloft, you can repeatedly perform aerial melee combos against the helpless foe without fear of reprisal.

Raise Stylish Rank with Melee Attacks

Melee attacks are the best method of raising your Stylish Rank, displayed on the right side of the screen. Perform a variety of melee attacks to keep raising the rank. Nero's Devil Bringer can significantly raise Stylish Rank if used with the right timing at the end of a melee combo. Sustaining damage lowers Stylish Rank. Style Points accrued during missions help determine overall ranking.

Maintain Stylish Rank with Gunfire

After defeating a foe, you may find that the next closest enemy is far away. If too much time passes, Stylish Rank may diminish. Maintain your current Stylish Rank by shooting distant enemies repeatedly with steady gunfire. Meanwhile, gradually move within melee attack range.

Enemies Go Boom

When enemies collide, both suffer more damage than through melee attacks alone! Nero can throw certain enemies into each other using his Devil Bringer. Frost and Assault demons are especially susceptible to this attack.

Smash Everything!

The number of Red Orbs found determines part of mission ranking. Acquire orbs by smashing environmental objects such as chairs, benches, pews, iron gates, garbage cans, candelabras, mirrors, stone columns, crates, barrels, boxes, and more.
