Chapter Three Walkthrough

At A Glance
  • The next steps in the Dead Rising walkthrough guide.

Dead Rising™ keeps you on your toes with missions designed to challenge your ability to stay alive while rescuing innocent victims. If you can keep your head about you and use these tips, you just might make it out of suburban hell in one piece.

The previous article in this series took you to the food court of the Mall where Brad confronts a gun toting Carlito. For some reason, Carlito has decided he doesn't just want to shoot zombies, he wants to shoot the living as well. Brad, being the government agent type, tries to stop Carlito. Your character Frank, being the heroic type, steps in to try and save the day.

You can't trust the living either.

Backup for Brad
When you're ready to provide "Backup for Brad," head into the area of the food court past the Welcome sign. Brad advises you to stick to the shadows, and he's not exaggerating. There are large support poles that cast square shadows. If you stand in these shadows, you're safer than anywhere else.

That isn't to say that you won't ever get hit by a bullet or a grenade, but it will happen less often. Speaking of grenades, watch out for them. If you stay alert, you might see one when it lands near your feet, leaving you a moment to run away.

Find a good spot and take some pot shots at Carlito. Don't be too bold at this stage, but do exactly as Brad told you, that is, stay in the shadows and keep Carlito dodging bullets. You'll probably run out of ammunition right about now.

There's a bit of drama in the works, and you'll view it via a cut scene. Once you've seen it, you'll have further instructions for taking out Carlito. There are some trash cans and large boxes will let you climb up to where Carlito is. Charge him and kick the snot out of him once you're up there, because if he gets any shots off at you, you will die quickly.

No matter how you prefer to travel, you'll hear
her screams and cries as soon as you get close enough.

A Mother's Lament
If you don't want to take on Carlito yet, or you're frustrated that he keeps killing you and you want to do something else, take on the "Mother's Lament" mission. Go to your watch page and set the guide arrow to see where to start this mission.

The mother in question is named Leah. She's barricaded in a jewelry store not far from the food court. You can run there, dodging zombies as you go, or kill as many of them as you want along the way. No matter how you prefer to travel, you'll hear her screams and cries as soon as you get close enough.

Leah has become separated from her child. As a result, she's more than a little nuts, as you'll discover when you approach her. Don't worry. She's not as dangerous as she seems. Talk to her as many times as you need to get her to join you.

Do not, however, leave the sanctuary of the countertops until you've managed to kill off most, if not all, of the zombies that come after you there. If you leave the shelter, then so will Leah. It's much easier to exterminate the zombies from behind the counter, and very difficult to protect Leah from the shambling masses once you're no longer under cover.

You're the only hero they have left.

You're the only hero they have left.

Heroic Deeds
Leah needs you to carry her. She's too afraid to make it on her own. You're going to have to get her in a piggy-back, and run to safety. You'll drop all your weapons and food when you carry Leah and you'll have no way to fight back the brain-starved undead.

Fortunately for you, the zombies don't seem able to grab you while you're carrying Leah. This makes it rather easy to move through them back to the Security Room where you can drop her off. Don't push your luck, though.

Even with Leah on your back, avoid getting too close to the zombies and keep moving. Don't dive into the center of a group of them. You better hope that you don't run into the criminals in the park while she's on your back either, because their bullets will knock her off your back. This will leave you without weapons and without the scant protection that Leah offers.

On the bright side, you can get the criminals' victim, Sophie, to follow you while you're carrying Leah, so if you can avoid getting hit by the criminals then you might be able to take both women to safety at the same time.

Each mission has something of a puzzle that you must solve, but the game gives you clues in the cut scenes and dialogue. Talk to everyone you can. Save as many survivors as you can. They're always grateful. When you complete a mission, you may earn a reward that helps you with future missions. You're here to take photos, yes, but that's not all. Remember, this is your story, and you're the hero.
