Chapter Two Walkthrough

At A Glance
  • Progress deeper the world of Dead Rising with this detailed walkthrough.

Dead Rising™, the new zombie action game from Capcom, sticks you in a mall in Willamette, Colorado, a town gone crazy. There's something strange going on with these people, and you plan on finding out just what it is. You landed, and then you found the Security Room, but that's just the beginning.

The previous article in this series took you to the roof of the Mall where Natalie and Jeff are in the midst of a mushy reunion.

Before you head down into the mall, lead them back to the Security Room. You can jump back up the ledge you dropped down off. Jeff and Natalie will follow along with you, though you may have to summon them individually.

You have to dive in at some point.

The Mall
After you've found Kent the Photographer and have practiced taking photos of him, you're ready for your first mission. Explore the stores here on this second-floor section of the mall where very few zombies will bother you.

Change your clothes in the shops and see what else you can find. Grab a skateboard and a golf club in the Sportrance store. You'll need them.

Then, before you do anything else, go into a bathroom and save the game. The bathrooms are located in the back hallway just like in a regular mall. Look for the plain concrete hall next to the Sportrance store.

If you're on the third floor, there will be a stairwell leading down to the second floor bathrooms. Save the game once you've gathered all the weapons you want and have found the clothes you want to wear. That way, when you die—and you will die—you won't have to do any of this all over again.

Use your gun and shoot them if you can,
or you can get up close and beat them.

The Park
All the missions you have received at this point will lead you across the park to the other side of the mall. When you first leave the mall, if you follow the wall to your right all the way around the park, you'll come across an entrance to the parking lot. In the parking lot, you can find both a motorcycle and a car, both of which you can drive. Use them for faster, safer travel across the park.

At some point when you enter the park after dark, you will run into three convicts in a jeep. This isn't a mission, it's an ambush. The cons have an automatic weapon mounted on the jeep, and although they're not zombies, they're not on your side either.

Don't bother trying to talk to them. These guys are psychos. If you can manage to take the jeep from them, you'll gain an achievement, but they're tough. They'll shoot you, run you over, or hit you with a bat as they drive past. Use your gun and shoot them if you can, or you can get up close and beat them. But beware, because it won't be easy.

The cons will be threatening a woman named Sophie. You'll find her near the pond in the center of the mark. You'll get a ton of PP if you help her escape them, but it's hard to do on foot. You'll be cut down with machine gun fire. Sophie will climb in the car with you, though, so that's your best bet.

The Food Court
The zombies are thick in the park, but they're only badly clustered up in front of the doors to the food court. The easiest way to get the zombie hoard away from the mall entrance is to attack them. The lawn mower is to the immediate right of the food court doors.

Once they know you're there, they'll come after you, and because you're smarter and faster than they are, you can lead them away and then loop back. Zip to the entrance while they're still grabbing at you on the lawn.

Inside the food court, you find Brad, and then you'll get shot at. You'll sit through a cut scene here that introduces you to Brad's predicament, but don't feel like you need to do the "Backup for Brad" mission immediately. If you'd rather do one of the other missions, feel free.

Perform some maintenance here if you need it. Run across to the Welcome sign and enter the restaurant area. You'll find food here if you're wounded. In addition, you find a fantastic weapon: the cleaver. With this weapon, you can attack fast and take out a zombie with a single swipe.

As you contemplate which missions to perform first, check your watch and the mission listing to see if any are running out of time. This will give you some criteria for deciding which missions to make a priority.

Remember, you don't have to do them all. You can easily let the innocents die, and you won't miss them. Plenty of other survivors will still need your help. Just keep moving. As soon as you finish (or fail) a mission, move on to the next one. Always remember that you're on a time limit. That helicopter's coming back for you whether you're ready for it or not.
