Sneak a Peek: Multiplayer

By Earl P. Thayton

Conker™: Live and Reloaded
will finally give us Xbox® gamers the chance to pit those well-known squirrels and teddiz against each other in a variety of blood-soaked arenas. Thanks to Xbox Live™, you'll be able to throw down with a total of 16 players per game. System Link players are invited to the party, too.

Mighty Maps
The game ships with eight unique multiplayer levels, from one based on the famous D-Day beach assault scene to the high-tech alien landscape of the "Three Towers." The levels are stocked with spawn points, sniper perches, vehicle generators, and of course, the obligatory explosive barrels and deadly falls. Many levels also sport powerful turrets for defending players to hop into.

Gotta love the kaboom factor.

Each level is designed for a different kind of team-play experience. For example, the blood-soaked WWII beach leads into a Tedi fortress, making for an asymmetrical base assault and defense scenario—no flags to capture.

In contrast, the facing gangways of the creepy spaceship "T.M.S. Spamono," with one centrally located flag, provides an entirely different type of game. In fact, the maximum number of players is reduced from 16 to 12 on this map due to the close quarters.

Gaming with Class
The multiplayer portion of the newest Conker game is not a simple brawl like Slayer mode in Halo®: Combat Evolved. Instead, it's a class-based system in which you do not have the same abilities as every other character in the game.

In the current build, there are six choices:

  • The heavy-weapons specialist Demolisher,
  • The stealthy Sneeker,
  • The classic sniper Long Ranger,
  • The well-balanced Grunt,
  • The fiery close-combat specialist Thermophile, and finally …
  • The Sky Jockey aircraft specialist, available on the outdoor maps.

A nightmare waiting to happen.

Each class has its own special weapons, running speed, and toughness rating. For example, the Demolisher may be slow, but he hits hard with that bazooka, and he's tough to take down. The stealthy Sneeker is a lightweight, but don’t let her get close to you with that saber!

Each class also has a preferred type of vehicle. For example, only the Sky Jockey can requisition aircraft. In contrast, a Grunt visiting the vehicle pad will be restricted to summoning the buggy-like Hogster.

Multiplayer Setup
Game hosts are able to customize their sessions in detail, controlling parameters such as the number of lives for players (which defaults to unlimited) to the brains of the 'bots ("n00b" to "Einstein").

Whether you are playing solo, via System Link, or on XboxLive, you'll be able to find or create a multiplayer experience that matches your needs exactly.

Oooh yeah, flamethrower baby!

Solo? Yep. If you are stuck on a desert island with no LAN or Xbox Live, you'll be glad to know that Conkerlets you play against 'bots, too! You can even play split-screen, with you and a buddy fighting or cooperating, as you wish. Your teams will be filled out as needed by 'bots.

Stay tuned for future Conker articles, where we will take a closer look at the game's classes, levels, and weapons.
