Repairing the Wire

At A Glance
  • Russian campaign two: "Not One Step Backwards!"
  • This mission is so big, we've split it into two parts.

Though you've successfully taken down a Stalingrad Nazi stronghold in your last skirmish, there's still much work to be done. A rather critical line of communication between your unit and another has been severed in multiple places, and it's your job to repair it. Lucky for you, your comrades will be fighting at your side, as you need all the backup you can muster.

Objectives
Your three main objectives are:

  1. Repair the communications wire in six places.
  2. Establish contact with headquarters via the field phone.
  3. Destroy three German Panzer tanks with sticky bombs.

Repairing the Wire
The location of each broken wire segment is displayed on your field compass. Your first destination isn't far off from where you start the level, so head towards the location marked onscreen. You quickly realize that a Nazi machinegun bunker in the distance will cut you and your men to shreds if you leisurely cross the road, so toss a smoker into the center of the street, wait for it to build a large cloud, and run across under the cover of fog.

Follow the wire to the first break and repair it. Take cover behind any furniture or rubble in the vicinity and take down nearby enemies. If you acquire the Gewehr 43, you'll have a handy weapon in your arsenal for taking down multiple foes.

Follow the wire and repair each broken segment you encounter. Keep in mind that the serpentine cable snakes its way through bombed-out buildings, up and down stairs, and through some hellish combat zones, so take your time and eliminate every single enemy before pressing on. Consult your compass for the location of the next objective and use the cable at your feet to lead you on your way.

Contact HQ
Once you've fully restored the communications line, it's time to contact headquarters to get your next objective. Again, refer to your compass display to get a general idea of where you're going. Pick up any supplies like ammo and grenades when you come across them, as you're going to need all the firepower in your arsenal to beat the last portion of this mission.

Victory is sweet.

The phone is located in the bombed-out basement of a building. Simply walk up to where it's sitting on the desk and activate it to get your orders. Head up the stairs and clear your way to the final confrontation with the tanks. Bear in mind that enemy reinforcements follow you, so be sure to watch your back as they trample up the stairs behind you.

Destroy the Tanks
In one of many nods to the film Saving Private Ryan, you're tasked with destroying roving tanks with sticky bombs. Common sense dictates that you can't just stroll alongside each one, knock on the lid, and ask the kind driver to detonate the bomb for you, so you need to be somewhat stealthy in your approach. Each tank's location is registered on your compass. Walk to the closest one and take cover behind whatever you can.

If a tank spots you, you'll have to contend with machinegun fire as well as the occasional shelling which will knock you on your ass—if it doesn't kill you first. Pick yourself up, get into position, and toss a smoker in the vicinity of the tank, but only when it's idle (otherwise it'll move away and you'll have wasted a smoke grenade in the process). Run through the thick cloud you just created and plant the bomb.

Destroy all three tanks (you probably want to thin the enemy infantry ranks before pulling this maneuver) and you're ready to crawl through the pipeline for another dose of frenzied combat. Which you'll want to prepare for by reading our next guide.
