The Winter War Walkthrough

Call of Duty® 2 can offer an exceptionally tough challenge, especially as the chaos of battles confuses or disorients you. This walkthrough takes you through the primary objectives for the Winter War level. Complete the training missions first to get a feel for the controls of the game. Once you've finished the training and made your way to the captured German soldier, it's time to get ready for the real battle.

After the Prisoner
You need to find the nearest armory, which should be no trouble. Simply head in the direction of the gold star on your compass—first, climb the wall along with your comrades, and then duck through the small hole in the wall. After that, just make your way through the trench to the armory. Although you can hear enemy fire, don't concern yourself with it; just follow the trench.

After Armory
After snagging your submachine gun and grenades, climb up the ladder your comrade sets up. At the top of the ladder, look straight ahead and throw a smoke grenade when prompted. This will cover you from the enemy. Once the smoke fills the area, head straight across into the building on the other side; follow your fellow soldiers so you don't get lost. Now it's time for battle.

Upon entering the ruins of the building, a vehicle filled with enemy soldiers pulls up. Toss a grenade near the back of the vehicle before they pile out to take care of the whole lot. Next, crouch behind cover and take out the Germans to the south sniping from the barricade. At the end of the street is a machine gunner in the top of a building. Grab cover and wait for an ally to toss a grenade inside.

Once the machine gunner is dead, follow your allies back around from where you came, and engage the enemies as you go. Use the red dots on your compass to locate and kill the enemies. Once you get near the Panzerwerfer, clear the area of enemies, use grenades to take out the small clusters quickly. Then, simply walk up to the front of the Panzerwerfer (the armored vehicle), hold down X to plant the explosives, back off, and enjoy the explosion.

Demolition
After destroying the Panzerwerfen, it's time to move on to the second part of the mission, called Demolition. Your overarching goal is to demolish a building the Germans have taken. First though, you must get to your initial objective. Proceed out of the room and turn right to head down the hallway. Before turning left at the end, crouch behind cover. The following room is crawling with Germans, so locate them one by one, taking them out and moving to cover as you do.

Stick with these guys ... they know what to do.

Proceed to the huge open windows on the opposite side of the room, but do not head outside. Instead, use cover at the edges of the windows to pick off the enemy troops behind the low walls outside. Once you see an ally crouch and walk over to the wall, follow suit. Hold the B button to lie prone and crawl over to the nearest wall. Pick off any remaining Germans out in the open with your rifle, then, press Y to select your machine gun and charge the building when your allies do.

Take out the crowd of enemies in the first area, and then head down the corridor farthest to the west. This will allow you to flank some Germans crouched behind cover. Don't shoot the ones that can't see you. Instead, sneak up from behind and click the left thumbstick to melee attack them from behind.

Through the Trenches
Next, head towards your objective marker (follow your comrades) to get to the trenches. Once there, crouch down and proceed as quickly as you can through the trenches. Don't bother trying to attack the tanks that roll above you, and there are no enemies in this trench line to worry about.

Once you're through, head up the stairs just after exiting the trench, and then step into the little building when you see your comrades and pick up the sniper rifle inside. Wait here as a fellow soldier gives orders and readies you for the German surge. Wait at the window, and soon the soldier tells you to open fire. Pick off the Germans with the sniper rifle to thin out their ranks.

When they get too close for the sniper rifle, switch back to your machine gun and cut them down from the relative safety of the window. When you hear a fellow soldier shout to charge, do just that. Follow your comrades (carefully) through the snowfield to the building on the other side. Switch back to the sniper rifle for this section so you can pick off enemies from a safe distance. Use the sandbags for maximum protection.

Waves of Enemies
Move very carefully and deliberately. Multiple waves of enemies will defend the building, and the building front itself will be manned by two heavy machine guns. Make sure you concentrate on sniping the operators, but don't leave it at one kill. Another enemy soldier will quickly take control of a machine gun if the gunner is killed. Stay patient and pick them off from a far. Try to stay prone and behind some cover during this section.

Once you beat back the last wave of defenders at the building, switch to your machine gun and clear out the enemies still inside. Then, report to your lieutenant when prompted for your last objective, which is to plant the charges to demolish the building. This is pretty straightforward. Once you grab the explosives from a fellow soldier at the front of the building, simply head to each objective marker on your compass, and hold down X to plant each explosive. When all three are planted, head quickly out of the building and across the field so you can watch the building crumble in all its magnificence.
