Trixie360 Interviews julie socks

Published March 11, 2009

She's a math major at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, lives in a Freddy Krueger house and uses Xbox LIVE® video chat to tutor high school students. Please raise your hand for the coolest future math teacher: julie socks!

trixie360: What's the story behind your Gamertag?

julie socks: Ahh, long story. Back in high school my friends and I would order pizza from the local grocery store on Fridays for movie night, and I would put the order in. The box would say Julie Saus because I always ordered sausage, and the lady's handwriting was always illegible so it looked like Julie Socks. The name has always stuck with me so I made it my first Gamertag.

trixie360: Where do you live?

julie socks: I live in a house on Elm Street, with Freddy Krueger. When my roommate and I went apartment hunting, we found it and fell in love with the fact that it was like the movies.

trixie360: And I'm assuming this creeptastic house is in Illinois. What do you do for work/school?

julie socks: I'm a student at the University of Illinois, and I tutor at the local high school.

trixie360: What's the worst or weirdest job you've ever had?

julie socks: The worst job I've had was a cashier at my local hardware store. My manager thought it would be funny to send me to re-label the light bulb aisle whenever I didn't have anything to do, and I always had nightmares of me just ringing up people at the register all throughout the night.

trixie360: How long have you been on Xbox LIVE?

julie socks: I've been on LIVE as a guest since July 2006. I didn't get my own account until November 2007.

trixie360: Ah sounds like a Halo® 3 thing! Do you have an archenemy on Xbox LIVE?

julie socks: Yes I do. Katie, merr im kt, is my archenemy and best friend at the same time. We always compete at games like Halo 3 and Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock.

trixie360: What's your Xbox setup like?

julie socks: I have my Xbox laying on top of my dresser in front of my TV, which is about 17-inch, and it's usually on mute. Hey, I'm a college student.

Halo 3 is julie socks' home on Xbox LIVE.

trixie360: What's the best feature of Xbox LIVE?

julie socks: The best feature on Xbox LIVE is definitely the Video Chat feature. I can use it to catch up with friends at home and also help some of my students that I tutor with their math because it's an easy way to contact me after hours.

trixie360: Ah, Xbox LIVE as a tutoring tool—very clever! I know you love Halo 3 for multiplayer gaming, but what is your favorite single player Xbox game?

julie socks: Gears of War® 2 Solo Campaign. I love the storyline, the Maria cut scene actually made me cry.

trixie360: What do you think is the best game of all time?

julie socks: I'm a bit biased, but I'd have to say Halo 3. I love the multiplayer and I could never get tired of it.

trixie360: What do you think is the best film of all time?

julie socks: Whatever Happened to Harold Smith. Anything that involves levitating turtles wins my heart.

trixie360: Rock Band or Guitar Hero?

julie socks: No question, Guitar Hero.

trixie360: What's the funniest thing you've ever heard on Xbox LIVE?

julie socks: I used to play UNO® with this one kid, and he was the laziest person I've ever known. One day he came online and told me that he pawned his entire Gundam action figure collection so that his mom could buy him some Dairy Queen.

UNO is a great game for chatting.

UNO is a great game for chatting.

trixie360: That's pretty pathetic. What is your greatest Xbox LIVE moment?

julie socks: My greatest XBL moment was finally getting my 35 in Halo 3, after winning what seemed like 19 games in a row. I expected fireworks.

trixie360: Who is your inner rock star?

julie socks: Judy Nails, definitely.

trixie360: Favorite cartoon character?

julie socks: Ms. Sara Bellum from Powerpuff Girls, because her face is never shown.

trixie360: What superpower would you like to have?

julie socks: I wish I had the ability to stop time, everything would be so much easier.

trixie360: If you could trade places with anyone for one day, who would it be?

julie socks: I would want to trade places with any of the Frag Dolls. A female gamer in the spotlight competing is something that I dream to be.

trixie360: I think I need to introduce you to Rhoulette! What celebrity would be the worst roommate?

julie socks: Britney Spears. She can't handle herself.

trixie360: You'd have to live with her dad too. How many people are on your Friends List?

julie socks: There's 47 people on my list, all of which I consider good friends. I don't like friending just anyone I meet on Halo or UNO.

The Askar achievement in Halo 3 can be difficult.

trixie360: Hot celeb you'd like to be stranded on a desert island with?

julie socks: Hugh Jackman <3

trixie360: If you could be any video game character, who would it be?

julie socks: Carmine from Gears of War 2, he's so adorable. Apart from the burning in acid.

trixie360: What's the worst food you've ever eaten?

julie socks: Dorm food. It really is disgusting.

trixie360: I grew up in a house where no one cooked. I thought dorm food was gourmet! What's the first video game you every played?

julie socks: Pole Position II on my brother's Atari. I was a baby gamer :)

trixie360: What's the last book you read?

julie socks: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. I finally got around to watching the film adaptation, Jack Nicholson was awesome.

trixie360: If you could go on tour with any band, which would it be?

julie socks: Slipknot! Their shows are insane!

trixie360: What do you predict will be the "next big thing" in gaming?

julie socks: I read an article a while back about using biological response for video games, like if the gamer is nervous in a FPS, then the aim is off. This will definitely come into play sometime.

trixie360: I would be even worse at games! What do you think is the best thing about Xbox 360?

julie socks: The new dashboard. Everything's easier to find, and Netflix on the Xbox is really easy since I don't have to wait anymore for my movies.

trixie360: What is the Xbox 360 Achievement that was hardest to get?

julie socks: Arg! The Askar Achievement on Halo 3. It's a meta-score achievement and it's super hard to beat by yourself because the marine A.I. is dumb!

trixie360: What would you like to be doing in ten years?

julie socks: Celebrating the ten year anniversary of you asking me this question. Ha, no. I plan on working in a high school and having a family, and hopefully still gaming.

The Nomination Mail:

Hi!

My name is Julie, and appropriately my Gamertag is julie socks. I'm nominating myself for the featured gamer because I believe that since the girl gaming community is growing we should have another woman featured gamer as a role model. I'm currently a college student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, my major is Mathematics and I tutor at the local high school. I think the community would be interested in hearing about me because I'm a fun gamer, and I also help my friends and other gamers out with math and physics homework through the video chat feature on Xbox. It's a great way to connect with the high school kids on a medium they enjoy, and it's also a great motivator for them to complete assignments. I'm a member of MATRIX (Mathematical Advancement Through Research and Idea eXchange), and I've been gaming since 2006, and out of my dorm room since 2008.

Thank you for the consideration!
