The Hardcore Call of Duty

At A Glance
  • Hardcore challenges for the ultimate Call of Duty 3 test.

Slogging through the mud, blood, and rain with a single-shot rifle and the righteous urge to drive off invading Nazis in Treyarch's Call of Duty® 3 is plenty hardcore for some. As an experience, though, Treyarch's new take on the Call of Duty franchise is nothing short of tangible.

The pounding chaos of battle is ever-present, and the choking anxiety at every turn (especially on Veteran difficulty) is only a breath away from consuming you entirely. If it's sheer volume of intensity you're after, Call of Duty 3 is the game for you, but the elite players will require added layers of difficulty to this already formidable title.

You win or lose, but according to the hardcore
master Vince Lombardi, "Winning isn't everything,
it's the only thing."

If you want to prove that you can not only beat this game, but own it as well, then take on these hardcore challenges.

Veteran Achievements
Call of Duty 3 offers a slew of achievements requiring that levels be completed with the use of only a certain type of weapon, such as single-action rifles, or that you finish a level only taking a certain amount of shots. There is even one challenge that requires you to use only melee attacks!

On their own, these achievements are noteworthy, but if you want a hardcore kick to really get the adrenaline pumping, take on this challenge: Don't complete any level without fulfilling the requirements for at least one achievement. On top of that, do it on Veteran difficulty. Forge through every level consumed with a constant fear of failure, because that's just how the hardcore gamer likes it.

Target Practice
Running and gunning in COD 3 is not an act of skill, it's the reaction of a panicked amateur after running around the corner and getting shot at. It may have the fringe benefit of a few cheap deaths, but no hardcore gamer can abide the certain knowledge that they were saved by dumb luck. Maintain discipline and fight like the trained Allied soldier you're supposed to be. When firing, do so only down the sight of your gun (pull the left trigger), essentially immobilizing yourself as you target your enemy.

Go to War
I'm hardly one to suggest abandoning deathmatch games online, or even the occasional round of capture the flag, but with the introduction of the tactically superior War game mode to Call of Duty 3, the bulk of your online play should be spent there. If you're looking to boast about your online skill, there is no better game to play than War for an accurate reading of your skills. Remember, in War it's not the kill count that matters. You win or lose, but according to the hardcore master Vince Lombardi, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing."

Stand and Fight
It is utterly counterintuitive, and in fact, tactically incompetent, but if you can complete the later levels in COD 3 without ever crouching, then you have an achievement worthy of self-congratulation. The skill required is rare indeed, but if you can pull this off without dying, you will deserve the utmost respect from your fellow gamers.

Supporting Role
Remember, the hardcore gamer is less concerned with statistics and more with the end results, so when playing online, choose your class based on need, not greed. If your team needs a scout, then man up and be the scout. If it's a medic that will win the day, then it's time to break out the gauze and revive your teammates. Play what your team needs, and if you set a good example, maybe less team-oriented players will follow suit and get with the program.
