Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote

The Xbox 360™ Universal Media Remote (sold separately) lets you control your TV, DVD and CD playback, Microsoft Windows Media Center, and the Xbox Dashboard.

  1. Set Up Your Remote
  2. Using Your Remote

Set Up Your Remote

To prepare the remote, first insert the batteries, then program the remote for use with your equipment.

Insert Batteries

The remote uses two AA (LR6) batteries (supplied).

To insert batteries into the Xbox 360™ Universal Media Remote:

  1. Remove the remote battery cover.
  2. Insert two new AA batteries as shown on the underside of the remote battery cover. For best performance, use disposable rather than rechargeable batteries.
  3. Replace the remote battery cover.
Program the Universal Media Remote for Your TV

Before your remote can work with your TV, you need to program it for use with your particular brand of TV. Two methods exist for programming your remote: manually entering your TV code and scanning to find your TV code.

To enter a TV code:

  1. Turn on your TV and point the remote toward it.
  2. Press and hold the TV and OK buttons simultaneously for two seconds. All buttons on the remote will then light up for two seconds, after which only the numeric TV buttons (1–12) will remain lit.
  3. Enter the code for your TV.

To find a remote code for your TV, see TV Codes for the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote
  4. Press the TV button again to save the code and exit. All buttons on the remote will blink three times to confirm your selection.

    Note

After 30 seconds of inactivity, the remote will exit TV programming mode. Pressing any button besides 0–9, CH+, or CH– returns the remote to its original settings.

  5. Press the TV button again to restore full TV/Xbox 360 operability.

To scan for a TV code:

  1. Turn on your TV and point the remote toward it.
  2. Press and hold the TV and OK buttons simultaneously for two seconds. All buttons on the remote will then light up for two seconds, after which only the numeric TV buttons (1–12) will remain lit.
  3. Press the CH+ or CH– button to send a series of off commands to your TV. Repeat until the TV turns off.

    Note

Give your TV enough time to respond to the off command after each button press. Some TVs take more time to react to off commands than others.

  4. Press the TV button to save the code and exit. All buttons on the remote will blink three times to confirm the code.
  5. Press the TV button again to restore full TV/Xbox 360 operability.

Note

If, after setting the TV code, you find that the remote is not functional or has incomplete or inaccurate TV functionality, try a different code for your TV manufacturer or scan for another code.

Using Your Remote

The Universal Media Remote works only with TVs, the Xbox 360 console, and a connected Microsoft Windows Media Center–based PC. It does not control VCRs, stand-alone DVRs and DVD players, or audio equipment.

The remote offers convenient backlit buttons that dim when not in use, a 30-foot range, and a 90-degree operational radius (plus/minus 45 degrees).

Controller Buttons

The Xbox Guide button on your remote puts the Xbox 360 experience at your fingertips. Use this button to turn your console on and off, and use the Xbox Guide button along with the A, B, X, Y, and OK buttons to navigate and control the Xbox Guide and the Xbox Dashboard, just as you'd use your controller.

The remote's Open/Close button will open and close the console's disc tray. The On/Off button will turn either your console or your TV on or off, depending on whether the remote is in TV mode or controller mode (press the TV button to switch between them).

A dedicated Back button simplifies Xbox Dashboard navigation.

  • DVD Menu: Takes you to the main setup menu for your DVD movies.
  • Back: Most useful for navigating within the Xbox Dashboard, this button will also remove the on-screen display during a DVD movie.
  • Information (INFO): Displays title, chapter, and elapsed-time information in a transparent window in the top-right corner of the screen.

To play DVD movies:

  1. Press Open/Close to open the disc tray.
  2. Place the DVD movie on the disc tray with the label facing out.
  3. Press Open/Close to close the disc tray. The DVD movie will begin playing.

The Xbox 360 console can play only region-1 DVD movies.
