Fable 2 video diary reveals cool combat details

Lionhead Studios’ Fable 2 is already shaping up to be one of the key events of the 2008 gaming calendar, and now a new video unveils details of a combat system that aims to keep things nice and simple.

How many times have your fingers failed you in midst of a manic melee? You know what we mean – bloodthirsty foes have you surrounded and you’re just about to deliver a blistering counterattack when adrenalin, the heat of the moment and good old-fashioned cack-handedness kick in and you press the Start button by accident. Argh!

Fable 2

However such buffoonery could soon be a thing of the past thanks to the game’s new context-sensitive ‘one-button’ combat system which, conveniently, is the subject of the second Fable 2 developer diary. In the video members of the development team begin by describing the various scrapes they’ve found themselves in during their (no doubt) misspent youths. No, we’re not sure what this has to do with the game’s novel combat system either but it sets the tone, we suppose.

In any case such talk is soon replaced by an intriguing behind-the-scenes reveal, in which we learn how Lionhead’s wish to evolve the original game’s combat lead to this new system and how it aims to balance depth with approachability and realism with believability – obviously it’s difficult to have too much of the former when there are spell-casting trolls to battle! And then, for good measure, we get to see assorted members of the development team imperilled at the hands of a sabre-wielding weapons expert and the highlights of a Lionhead versus Rare (of Viva Pinata, Jetpac Refuelled fame) football match.

Well, it looked like football… But, whatever – it’s all fascinating stuff and it’s available to view right now at the official Lionhead site – check it out!
