Set Up Your Connection

We recommend that you use a direct connection to the ntl broadband service.

Before following any connection steps below, you should print or save an offline version of this page, as you will need to disconnect your PC from the Internet.

Also, before following any connection steps see your Xbox Instruction Manual for important safety information.

Direct Connection with ntl

To directly connect your hardware:

  1. Turn off your devices (Xbox console, modem, and, if you have one, your PC) before connecting any cables.
  2. Disconnect your ntl cable modem from its power source to turn it off.
  3. If the PC NIC is already connected to the modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC NIC.
  4. You need to bring your cable modem to CATV point nearest your Xbox console.
  5. Connect the Ethernet out port on the Cable modem to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using the Ethernet cable.
  6. Turn on your modem.
  7. Turn on your Xbox console, with no disc in the disc tray.
  8. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Xbox Live.

If the Xbox Live screen is displayed ("Account Management, New Account, Network Setup") congratulations! You are connected to Xbox Live. To create your Xbox Live account, or for more information about managing your account, see Signing Up for Xbox Live.

If your Xbox console cannot automatically connect to XboxLive, you will receive the following message: "Could not connect to Xbox Live”, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with ntl for more detailed information about the problem and steps you can take to fix it.

Troubleshooting your Connection with ntl

Power cycle your modem.

Turn off your modem and unplug it from its power source. Leave it off and disconnected from power for two to three minutes. Then plug it back in, turn it back on, and try to connect again.

Why do I receive the "Xbox Live Not Found" error message?

You can receive this message for many reasons. The first thing to do is to check the status of the Xbox Live services on the Xbox Live Support page. If the service is up and running and you receive this error, you are likely having a different problem. Here are a couple things you can try:

First, make sure that your Xbox is connected directly to your modem. Next, power your modem down for 2-3 minutes, and then power it back up again. This power cycling of the modem is sometimes necessary when changing from one device to another (in this case, changing from your PC and connecting your Xbox).

Why does turning my modem off for a few minutes and then turning it on again (power cycling) fix the DNS Not Resolved problem?

Some modems are configured to "remember" the MAC address of the device that is connecting through them. By power cycling the modem, it "forgets" about your PC and will let your Xbox through. Generally, this occurs because your ISP is only allowing you to connect with one network device at a time.

I don't have a PC. Can I use Xbox Live without one?

An Xbox plugged directly into a cable modem will work. ntl generally assume you have a PC, however for customers who don’t have a PC ntl will support the broadband service to the cable modem.

What kind of cable should I use to connect my Xbox to my broadband modem?

Ethernet, network cables (straight-through). Normally, we recommend using a Category 5 (Cat 5).
