Setting Up Your Connection
Choose your connection type
For IOL Broadband, you should use either a router connection or a Shared PC Connection.
Before following any connection steps below, you should print or save an offline version of this page, as you will need to disconnect your PC from the Internet.
Also, before following any connection steps see your Xbox Instruction Manual for important safety information.
Router Connection with IOL Broadband

It is advisable to remove any previous broadband access modems from your PC, as installation of your new Zyxel router may fail or not function correctly. This can be done by either using add/remove programs, found under the control panel of your PC or by using any uninstall procedures shipped with your original modem.
To share your IOL Broadband Internet connection with your PC using a router:
- Turn off your devices (Xbox console, modem, and PC) before connecting any cables or new hardware. You might need to disconnect your modem from its power source to turn it off.
- If the PC or NIC is already connected to a modem, disconnect the Ethernet cable from the PC. Now remove the telephone line connection of your old modem from its wall socket or micro-filter.
- Connect the ADSL port on your new Zyxel router to your ADSL-enabled telephone line using the RJ-11 cable and micro-filter supplied with the router. You must use the micro-filter if you wish to use other telephone equipment on your ADSL-enabled telephone line.

- Connect the Ethernet port on the ADSL router to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console using an Ethernet cable. (You can use the PC via the Ethernet port simultaneously with your Xbox, but you will require an Ethernet Hub to split the output from the router).
- Turn on your devices. You should turn them on in order from the wall socket out. This means, first turn on your router, then your PC.
Initially you will need to configure your router for connection to IOL Broadband, the method for configuration is dependant on the type of connection between your PC and the router via Ethernet. As part of this process you will be required to enter details of your IOL Broadband account, e.g. username and password. Once configured this information is stored within the router and is used for future automatic connections to the Internet. - Verify that the PC can access the Internet. If not, see Troubleshooting Your Connection with IOL Broadband.
- Turn on your Xbox console with no disc in the disc tray. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Xbox Live.
- Choose New Account
If the Billing Region selection screen appears, congratulations! You are connected to Xbox Live. To create your XboxLive account, or for more information about managing your account, see Signing Up for Xbox Live.
If your Xbox console cannot connect to Xbox Live, you will receive the following message: "Could not connect to XboxLive”. Select “Yes” to be taken to the “Connect Status” screen, where your Xbox will begin a series of tests help diagnose the problem. Use the on-screen help for information about the problem, and the steps you can take to fix it.
Note With a router connection, you do not need to turn on your PC to access Xbox Live from your Xbox console.
Shared PC Connection with IOL Broadband
It is possible to connect your Xbox directly to your broadband line without the need for a router, using a PC with an installed Ethernet card, an ADSL modem, and Windows networking. Esat BT do not recommend or support this solution, but set-up instructions are available here.
