Your Xbox 360 has got Worms

Not only the first turn-based strategy game on Xbox Live Arcade, but one of the finest ever made. Also, to the best of our knowledge, the pioneer of comedy helium-gas high-pitched voices in videogames (and it still makes us laugh). Yes “Worms” is/are what we’re talking about – not something you’d usually admit to having, not even if you’re a filthy dog, but on XBLA something that’ll make us proud!

Worms first broke rank in 1994, and there have been successful onslaughts ever since. Of course this latest version for Xbox 360 is the ultimate. Indeed, the ultimate edition of the ultimate online versus game as some people would have it.

Your Xbox 360 game idea

You’ll notice the game looks basic, though charming and colourful in high def and all that. Do not underestimate what lies beneath! Randomly generated battlefields mean you’ll never play the same game twice. You need to think on your feet, or rather soft worm bellies, to make the best use of your arsenal versus up to three other players locally or via Xbox Live. And by weaponry we don’t just mean guns, grenades and bazookas but old ladies, concrete donkeys, and the infamous exploding sheep. Yes, exploding sheep but even your mother will find this funny. Baah-boom.

Worms is also celebrated for its insane range of game options, so you can customise the parameters of each face-off before it begins. Similar to the multiplayer settings in most modern first-person-shooters (starting weapon, time limit, etc) but Worms did it first okay. Just remember that. You can even choose their gravestones – you can’t even do that in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas.

If you’re playing solo, there are 20 levels of difficulty to master and good luck with all of that because you’ll need it. Worms is available from Wednesday 7 March on Xbox Live Arcade costing 800 Microsoft Points.
