Xbox Live and Wireless Networks

It's easy to connect to Xbox Live without wires, if you use the right equipment.

Wireless Router Connection

The easiest way to go wireless is to use a wireless home router and a wireless-to-Ethernet bridge that is Xbox Compatible logo–certified.

Xbox Compatible devices integrate with the Xbox Dashboard and have been fully tested to support all features of Xbox Live.

Microsoft does not provide any technical support or troubleshooting related to any wireless-to-Ethernet devices that are not Xbox Compatible logo–certified. If you have any questions or problems with these devices, you should contact the manufacturer of the device, not Microsoft.

If your wireless-to-Ethernet bridge is not Xbox Compatible, you will likely need to configure it with a PC before connecting it to your Xbox console.

Currently we support the following Xbox Live Compatible wireless devices:

D-Link DWL-G810 with firmware version 3.10b29.
Firmware update is available at ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk.

To connect your Xbox console to Xbox Live with your Xbox Live Compatible wireless router:

  1. Set up a Router Connection from your wireless router to the Internet.
  2. According to your router manufacturer’s instructions, write down the SSID and channel of your wireless router. If you are unfamiliar with your router's SSID and channel, see your router documentation.
  3. According to your adapter manufacturer's instructions, connect your wireless-to-Ethernet bridge to your Xbox console.
  4. From the Xbox Dashboard, select Settings, Network Settings, Advanced, and Wireless.
  5. From the Wireless Status screen, select Settings.
  6. Your router can be configured to either broadcast or not broadcast its SSID. If your router is configured to broadcast its SSID, see step 6a below. If it is configured to not broadcast its SSID, see step 6b below. The Xbox Dashboard will list the SSIDs that your Xbox Compatible wireless bridge finds. If the Xbox Dashboard doesn’t show your router's SSID, your router isn’t broadcasting the SSID.
    • If the SSID is broadcast, select the SSID (written down in step 2) of your wireless router from the list of SSIDs in the Select Network screen
    • If the SSID is not broadcast, select OTHER from the list on the Select Network screen. Then enter the SSID (written down in step 2) using the Xbox Dashboard virtual keyboard.
  7. From the Wireless Settings screen, select Network Mode as Infrastructure. Select Security Type and configure the Xbox Compatible wireless bridge with the same security settings (NONE, 64-bit WEP, or 128-bit WEP) as your wireless router.

Important The Xbox Dashboard supports 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption for Xbox Compatible wireless bridges. Microsoft highly recommends that you secure your wireless network by taking advantage of 128-bit WEP encryption. However, the use of WEP is not required for any Xbox Compatible wireless bridge to connect to a wireless router.
  8. Press A to save the new settings, and then B to go back.
  9. From the Wireless Status screen, check that your Xbox console is connected to the network name (SSID) specified in Step 6.
  10. Press B twice to go back. From the Network Settings screen, select Connect to connect to Xbox Live.
  11. From the Connect Status screen, verify that the Xbox console connects to Xbox Live.

Windows ICS/Ad Hoc Connection

Note This configuration will require two network adapters, one of which must be a wireless adapter.

To connect your Xbox console to Xbox Live using Windows ICS:

  1. Set up a Windows ICS connection from your PC to the Internet. Verify that you have Internet connectivity by browsing to a Web page. Note that your wireless adapter should not be receiving an IP address from your ISP. The wireless adapter will be used to connect to the Xbox Compatible wireless bridge. The wireless network adapter in your PC should be receiving an IP address from Windows ICS.
  2. Configure your PC's wireless network adapter for a Computer to Computer (Ad-Hoc) connection. Write down the network name associated with your wireless adapter.
  3. According to your adapter manufacturer's instructions, connect your wireless-to-Ethernet bridge to your Xbox console.
  4. From the Xbox Dashboard, select Settings, Network Settings, Advanced, and Wireless.
  5. From the Wireless Status screen, select Settings.
  6. Select the network name (written down in step 2) from the Select Network screen. If you do not see your network name, select OTHER. Then enter the network name using the Xbox Dashboard virtual keyboard.
  7. From the Wireless Settings screen, set Network Mode to Ad Hoc 802.11 b/g.
  8. From the Wireless Settings screen, select Security Type and configure the Xbox Compatible wireless bridge with the same security settings (NONE, 64-bit WEP, or 128-bit WEP) as your PC's wireless adapter.

Important The Xbox Dashboard supports 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption for Xbox Compatible wireless bridges. Microsoft highly recommends that you secure your wireless network by taking advantage of 128-bit WEP encryption. However, the use of WEP is not required for any Xbox Compatible wireless bridge to connect to Windows ICS .
  9. Press A to save the new settings, and then B to go back.
  10. From the Wireless Status screen, check that your Xbox console is connected to the network name (SSID) specified in Step 7.
  11. Press B twice to go back. From the Network Settings screen, select Connect to connect to Xbox Live.
  12. From the Connect Status screen, verify that the Xbox console connects to Xbox Live.
