All that stuff is ancient history but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how well Sonic and the Golden Axe heroes have weathered the decade in their original ‘sprite’ (don’t ask) form. You’ll be able to experience this for yourself when both games hit Xbox LIVE Arcade today, 11 July. In 2007 we take the idea of an electric blue, supersonic hedgehog for granted; like it’s normal. But believe us it was a massive shock seeing Sonic and his bright red sneakers for the first time. Sonic charged into action as though his whole world were a rollercoaster, running upside down, speeding beneath waterfalls and bashing through walls to save his woodland pals from Dr Robotnik. Sonic the Hedgehog still looks crisp, colourful and impressively quick. Golden Axe gameplay is as robust as Gilius Thunderhead’s breast plate. Gilius the dwarf joins Amazonian warrior Tyris Flare and barbarian Ax Battler for a medieval crusade to end Death Adder’s tyranny over their land. Side-scrolling fighting games traditionally took place in the backstreets of make believe cites. Golden Axe broke the mould with a journey through burning villages and on the back of a giant bird. It always was and still is fantastic. Both Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe are timeless classics that we know you’ll enjoy playing even today. They’re waiting for you on Xbox LIVE Arcade. |
