Yet another legend arrives on Xbox LIVE Arcade, a Hall Of Fame masterpiece worthy of a roster that includes Pac-Man and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The game is Namco-Bandai’s Soulcalibur, which pushed the boundaries of 3D fighting games back in 1998, and still looks and plays magnificently.
Ahead of it’s time? We certainly think so. A decade ago this was showcase software for SEGA’s last ever console Dreamcast. Time has flown while Soulcalibur has remained a stand-out moment in gaming history. You can see how the characters look terrific, but you’ll find the rewards for mastering their moves against friends are untarnished. Playing Soulcalibur you’ll be sampling a great moment in history, but also getting some practice for Soulcalibur IV due next month. There are 19 amazing characters to control in Soulcalibur, comprising the good the bad and the ugly (yes Voldo, we’re talking about you!). The variation of individual tactics is one of the greatest aspects of the game; each weapon configuration combines with a character’s physical attributes to dictate their style. Nightmare and Siegfried wield gigantic broadswords, slow but powerful. Ivy can really upset you with her famous sword that transforms into a razor-sharp whip. Kilik is speedy with his Jingu Staff, but nowhere near as tricky to combat as Maxi and his nunchucks. Beating your friend on the same console is always going to be fun, but if you want to really prove your mastery of Soulcalibur there are 60 different Leaderboards, spanning each character and the 10 gameplay modes. And finally, but of course, this special edition Xbox LIVE Arcade rendition of Soulcalibur is presented in 1080p high definition for those of you with compatible HDTVs. Soulcalibur is available now from Xbox LIVE Marketplace and costs 800 Microsoft Points.
