In Asteroids, gamers are cast as fearless space pilots, navigating their way through an increasingly intense asteroid field blasting the hulking masses of space rock into their component molecules, while at the same time taking on alien saucers hiding in the meteor storm. In addition to rock-crunching laser cannons, gamers are also kitted out with a hyperspace device – use this to teleport out of harm’s way when cornered by an unstoppable wave of meteors, or an incoming volley of alien laserfire. Asteroids Deluxe is a subtle retooling of the original, with improved graphics, more devious alien intelligence and a powerful new enemy: the Killer Satellite. This tricky opponent splits into smaller, faster craft when hit, so be careful. To help even the odds, gamers are equipped with a more advanced version of the original space fighter, with the hyperspace device swapped out in favour of an energy shield capable of repelling both asteroids and enemy gunfire. While the original recreations of these arcade classics are going to thrill retro fans, the new high definition versions are squarely aimed at today’s generation of Xbox 360 gamers, with vectorised graphics and explosive effects similar in style to the brilliant Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved.
