Do I look like an Olympian?
I’m a huge sports fan, in case you hadn’t noticed. This week my head is buzzing with excitement for the Olympics. I’ve got my TV schedule sorted and the stuff I’ll miss set to record, plus I’m spinning Sega’s Beijing 2008: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games (Beijing 2008) in my Xbox 360. I am Mr Olympic Games.
After a jog around the park, throwing a few sticks for the dogs, and swimming a couple of hundred metres I often feel like a world class athlete – really, those dogs have to run a long way to play fetch! But to properly soak up the atmosphere I’d need to be in China, which I’m not, so playing Beijing 2008 is the closest I’ll get to such glory. Even if I’m occasionally whipped at weightlifting by younger relatives! Beijing 2008 will keep the Olympic torch burning in Boyd Castle long after the actual event has closed. Everyone who visits has their personal favourite events, meaning I get chance to appreciate most if not all of them in depth. Sega has made a huge effort to keep the gameplay involving and to make it feel special whenever you win. The thrill is greater if you adopt the international spirit and compete on Xbox LIVE. Similarly dramatic is Summer Athletics from Eidos. Although it doesn’t bear the Olympic license, the sporting values shine through. Each of the events are fun to play, and up to four friends can take part. Athletics titles never get boring when you’ve good company to enjoy them with. I’m personally ‘stoked’ about Madden NFL 09 this week too. The series just gets better each year, and this time around it’s so great I was doing touch-down celebrations at the check out! Give it a try, you’ll see.
