Virtua Tennis serves an Ace at X06

With realistic graphics and minutely-tuned gameplay fitted as standard we were beginning to wonder where Tennis video games could possibly go next – after all they’re just glorified Pong! at the end of the day, aren’t they? Whatever the case we were wrong to make such assumptions of Sega’s excellent Virtua Tennis 3…

It’s true to say that players of previous titles in the series will be able to pick up VT3 straight away, but that would be to overlook the game’s feature subtlety. Put simply – and that’s an important word – Sega has increased the whole feeling of precise, player-articulated control. It’s an obvious thing to say, but everything really is within the player’s grasp, and when it all goes wrong you’ll have nobody else to blame!

Virtual Tennis 3

This is largely down to the game’s gratifyingly simple interface. Player movement and shot direction are controlled with the left analogue stick, while most shots are fired off using the X button, which can be held down to power-up. The speedy gameplay of VT3 is encumbered by nothing more complicated than the need to be in a good position to receive your opponent’s shot and to fire yours back. Of course if you’re off-balance or at the net when your chum has just lofted one over your head your response is not likely to be as effective.

Player-creation, quick match, the fun mini games (ten of them brand new for VT3) and the tournament-based career mode, where you’ll compete against real stars of Tennis, are all included here. Needless to say VT3 has jaw-slackening good looks too. But however you experience it Virtua Tennis 3 is all about gameplay – pure and simple – and you will absolutely love it!
