Sonic and Silver get new sheen at X06

Although basically the same two-level demo of Sonic the Hedgehog as seen in Leipzig last month, the X06 version is slicker by far. Plus it’s the 15th anniversary for this little feller; Sonic is practically an X06 V.I.P.!

We’re going to assume that we’re all pretty clear on what Sonic the Hedgehog is all about, guys. You know – awesome, fast, cute… blue. Let’s start with Silver for a change, because he’s new. Like Sonic, Silver is rather speedy but chooses not to engage his enemies directly. Instead of a dash attack, Silver uses psychokinetic powers to pick up objects and use them as improvised missiles. He can also use his mind to change the physical properties of objects, turning metal into rubber for example. Think X-Men’s Magneto and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect, and equally as ruthless when it comes to handing out punishment.

Sonic

Sonic, meanwhile, is his usual casual self in his latest mission. Enemies are obstacles and can be avoided if you prefer, the priority being to race through each stage as quickly as possible (because that’s the coolest achievement as Sonic). The ‘Aztec’ style ruins in the demo now zip by more gracefully at a rate of silly miles-per-hour and the blur effect really adds to the impact.

In previous ‘Sonic’ adventure games, new friends added to the variety of gameplay but didn’t throw into such contrast the differences in game styles. Playing through the Xbox 360 demo, you realise how much Sonic performs like a bullet-meets-pinball aiming for record-breaking high scores. By comparison, Silver lets you stop and admire the view… and then trash it big style!
