X06 Round-up

Every once in a while, the games world sees a landmark gaming event that helps shape it for years to come.  There was the first time you saw Sonic the Hedgehog zipping along the screen at super speed – the first time Konami ever showed Metal Gear Solid 2’s cinematic trailer and of course, that Halo 2 E3 demo that set the internet alight. At X06 in Barcelona this year, with over 18 major announcements made and the biggest games ever on show, the bar has been raised and we were there to catch this incredible event with the rest of the Xbox team.

We arrived in Barcelona to hushed tones and the occasional whisper of “have you seen that trailer” in the hotel lobby. Having checked into the hotel, we decided that we should probably go and see what’s happening at the venue in preparation for our live webcast of the event itself.

We got there just in time for the first dress rehearsal with Peter Moore and got to see a number of the trailers that would be shown the following day.  From Banjo Kazooie to PGR 4, they all looked incredible in high definition on the screen in the theatre and when Halo Wars appeared we had to pick up our jaws from the floor.

Back stage we weaved through thousands of cables to reach our production area for the live webcast of the press conference.  Amidst a pair of PCs and a mountain of cables, we found our webcast specialist smiling away as he watched the Blue Dragon trailer once more on the live web feed for Xbox.com.

After the excitement of seeing the big games trailers and having a sneak peak at Assassin’s Creed and Forza Motorsport 2, we retired to our hotel to see how the games convention part of X06 was shaping up.  After a quick go on Gears of War, we found Mike Newey, Gamertag: Country Music, hooked on World Snooker Championship 2007.  Clearly he’d missed the Lumines Live stand from across the hall!
