Rainbow Six brings Vegas to Barcelona

In a game that’s clearly (and acknowledged to be) influenced by hit TV show 24, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas follows events that unfold within the same gripping timeframe. The game pans out as one seamless mission, broken down into several crucial stages in which the whole of Las Vegas must be freed from terrorist control.

Well, it’s clear that Ubisoft’s elite has grabbed Xbox 360 by the throat, as the new Rainbow Six is both dazzling and complex. In addition to being one of the first games to support Xbox Live Vision camera, the latest operation really ups the ante with new gameplay mechanics and has fun with special effects worthy of its Vegas backdrop. However the emphasis remains those trademark tactical smarts.

The pace never lets up as mission briefings are delivered on the fly from Officer Joanna Torres – she’ll send detailed videos on request, to be watched in your HUD while considering your best options. Further information can be gleaned from news broadcasts or, if you’re very careful, enemy chatter. Whatever, there’s no call for pre-mission briefings or cinematic cut-scenes to break up the action.

Although many of us are keen to learn more of the multi-player scenarios, Ubisoft Montreal is stressing a greater, story-driven one-player campaign than Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow. Your squad shares a variety of specialist skills, best employed according to strict OPA (Observe, Plan, and Attack) guidelines. The drama unfolds via your team-mates following individual instructions such as how to react upon sighting an enemy (shoot or hold fire). However the slickest moments emerge with the new Tagging system, targeting enemies for your buddies to take down.

There appears to be no stopping Ubisoft Montreal.
