How prepared are you to face the reality of a WWII foot-soldier’s experience? If you feel no fear, and have what it takes to be a team player under the most terrifying conditions imaginable, you might just pass the test for a role in Call of Duty 3.
Activision is premiering Call of Duty 3 in a special theatre at the Leipzig GC, and we have all the inside intel. From the top, CoD3 is even more realistic than last year’s not entirely unconvincing episode. Equal effort has been expended on both single- and multi-player scenarios, and greatly boosted by the decision to create everything from scratch to push the next generation potential of Xbox 360. Frankly, you’re really not gonna believe your eyes, or ears, this time around.
Against the backdrop of the Normandy Breakout, retracing the steps from D-Day to the liberation of Paris in 1944, the single-player mission is pure heart-in-mouth. From the moment a grenade explodes beneath your infantry truck the sensory immersion is profound, there is no doubt the small rural town of St Lo has become a war zone and you’re in the thick of it. The most dramatic moments in CoD2 are not even close.
Multi-player CoD3 has been built largely according to the suggestions of the CoD2 fan base. Up to 24 players can compete online, 12-versus-12, in team-based games. The introduction of close-quarters combat and improvised traps/explosives raises the stakes on both the tactical side and ‘in yer face’ bravado. Soft cover, such as bushes and wooden furniture, is fully destructible to make heroes out of those who’d much rather hide until it’s all over!
