Halo 3: ODST Firefight mode survival tips

Canadians love Halo 3: ODST!  One of the best new ways to play together is in the game’s brand new Firefight mode which pits you and up to three other Orbital Drop Shock Trooper friends against wave after wave of filthy covenant enemy forces.  Surviving for a few minutes is a piece of cake, but with seven shared lives between the entire team, working together to get a decent score and earning yourself one of the eight Firefight achievements requires teamwork.  You’ll also need to earn at least one of the eight achievements to qualify for a sweet Bonus Prize pack in our “ Firefight to Victory

Xbox Canada enlisted the help of the community over at readyuplive.com and 360Sync.com and asked them to provide some tips on outliving your enemies and achieving greatness.  – Jaken Bear”

Are you struggling to stay alive in Halo 3: ODST’s new Firefight mode? Well we have some tips to help guide you as you battle the never-ending waves of Covenant forces.

1: Stay away from Phantoms.

At the beginning of each wave, a Phantom or two will come in to unload Covenant troops. Don’t be the hero. When you hear a Phantom flying in, run for your life and take cover. The Phantom turrets pack a pretty big punch, and destroying them will just waste your ammo as they respawn every wave.

2: Never stay in one place for too long.

Everyone is guilty of this one, even us. The number one easiest way to die in Firefight is from a Wraith blast or the dreaded Plasma Grenade. If you can’t find a good, safe place to camp out, make sure you are strafing left and right constantly. Otherwise you’ll be staring at your body, dealing with the ridicule brought from being stuck.

3: Be ready for the Drones.

Drones WILL come, whether you like it or not. Always have a weapon that can deal with them either on you or near you at all times. These weapons include the Silenced SMG, the Carbine, and the Plasma Rifle. The Auto Mag is NOT a good weapon to use against Drones!

Halo

4: Know your map.

Always know where the crucial parts of the map are. This means health packs, ammo, weapons, vehicles, safe points, and covenant respawn points. The further you are into your firefight game the more important these things become. You WILL run out of ammo and need to get more. Same goes for everything else.

5: Be aware of Fuel Rod Covenant and Brute Chieftains.

Grunts or Brutes toting Fuel Rod Guns can mangle you in as little as one shot. Focus on taking them out before any other Covenant forces. This is especially important if you are in a vehicle. Those sneaky Fuel Rod Grunts can destroy you!

6: Have an anti-brute weapon at all times.

When you get to the harder sets, your Auto Mag and SMG become pretty useless for taking down Brutes. Always try to carry an anti-brute weapon. The best weapon is a plasma pistol. Hit him with a charge shot then pop him in the head with a Mag shot. This will also help you net the “My Clothes!” achievement. Other good weapons include the Needler, Carbine, and Rocket Launcher.

Halo

7. Stick it to the Brutes!

With “Tough Luck” on, Brutes have the nasty habit of jumping away from your sticky grenades. There is a trick though! If you wait for them to start throwing a grenade at you, you can sidestep them and throw one right back. The Brute will still be in the middle of his throw, and unable to dive out of the way in time. (Don’t get to close, or he may charge at you and take you down with him!)

8: Know how to deal with Jackals.

I’ve seen some people waste entire clips on a single Jackal. That is a no-no. To quickly decimate a Jackal, shoot it in the hand. The shield has a hole there. Shooting him there will make him recoil, leaving him open for a quick headshot. SMGs do wonders against Jackals as you will almost always hit the hand.

9: Stick together.

It’s a war out there, and you won’t go very far without the help of your teammates. Always remain in pairs of two or more. The only reason for you to venture out alone is if you need to quickly grab a weapon off the battlefield. If you choose to do this, do it wisely and carefully. The best time for weapon pickups is between waves.

Halo

10. Save your big guns.

We know it’s tempting to fire all of your rockets at the Grunts and Jackals in the first waves, but use that willpower! There is a good chance that you will need your rockets, sniper and Spartan Laser for later waves that include Wraith tanks and Brute Chieftains.

11: Use vehicles wisely.

While jumping in a Ghost or Chopper seems like a great idea, it can be bad for your team if not done properly. You need to always be aware of your teammates’ locations so as to not put them on the wrong side of a splatter. Also make sure that you help your team. If you are out on your own driving a vehicle around, your other teammates are one man short somewhere else.

12: Save weak enemies for “Black Eye.”

When the “Black Eye” skull is turned on, you and your team do not regain stamina when hit by enemies. You must punch an enemy in order to have your health recharge (one punch will do!). When the opportunity arises, let an enemy run up to you so that you and your teammates can punch it in order to bring your stamina back. The Jackals have plasma pistols and no grenades, making them a safe bet.  Be sure to let your teammates know what you are attempting so you do not receive any friendly fire.

1. Combo, combo, combo: The more kills you can get in a streak (double kills, triple kills, overkills, and the rest) the more points you get per each next kill. You'll know that your combo is still going when the points are still on your screen.  Also, the more kills you get without dying, nets you points when you hit certain milestones. – 360sync.com

2. The more the merrier: The more people you can get to play with you (up to an additional 3) the more lives you'll get at the end of a round, and the more people you'll have to cover your back. -INFECTEDPB503

3. The harder, the more multiplier: The higher in difficulty you go, the more points you get per kill. Watch out though, it may come back and bite you, because you also die easier. -Muddy9494

4. Split it up (sometimes):If you have 4 players, divide up into pairs, that way you can cover more of the map but still have each others' backs. -Frij0lit0

5. Hammer in a black eye: When the Black Eye Skull turns on (the skull that requires you to melee to recover your stamina), grab a hammer and smash people to get your stamina back quicker. –AlkalineProdigy

6. Don't die: This one's pretty simple. Try not to die, sacrifice yourself or purposely betray teammates. First, your team loses points for every death. Second, you lose even more points for betrayals. Third, lives are more precious the further on you go, so try to save them for the harder waves! –Higamason

7. Plasma Pistols are your friends: On the higher difficulties, Heroic or Legendary, assign one or two people to using the plasma pistol.  An overcharged blast drops shields instantly and allows others to get in headshots. You can count on getting a lot of assist medals for this one. -ll 1337sauce ll
